Final Projects: Group Podcast Episodes

The final project was the culmination of a semester of research, skill building, and collaboration for the students of LAST303. Each group planned and recorded an intro, main topic segments, and outro for their podcast episode. Students selected and incorporated legal music and sound effects with the goal of enriching and complementing the episode content. Students were given free rein over the format (interviews, solo host, mixed format, etc.) with the goal of creating an 18- to 20-minute podcast episode.

In terms of topic, students were asked to engage with the course topic, elaborating upon Indigenous autonomy and agency and the shifting role of labour during the era of neoliberal globalisation. In its treatment of this theme, each episode sought to meaningfully connect that information (Indigenous autonomy, labour, globalisation) with the history and culture of the assigned Indigenous group.

The coronavirus pandemic created unique issues for students, as many individuals left British Columbia to fly home (at one point, all four members of one group were located in different countries!), and students could no longer utilize the many resources available to them on campus, such as recording studios and professional microphones. However, students were creative in identifying solutions to these challenges. They worked together to produce high quality podcast episodes based on thorough research, in which they implemented the many recording skills they had learned throughout the semester.

We hope you enjoy the episodes!
