‘League of Legends’ makes big league moves

In the recent years the eSports industry has seen significant growth with the introduction of a multiplayer online battle arena game called “League of Legends.” In just 5 years game became internationally recognized. Riot Games has a wide range of target customers, but they are successful because Riot has created a sense of community among its customers. They listen and give feedback to the opinions of individual players as well as constantly update the game accordingly. This way Riot was able to attract more and more players. Players continue playing because the game reflects the fundamental human nature of striving to be the best. Riot’s key activities are also crucial to its success. The game’s world championships was held in Staples Center in 2013, where NBA and NHL games are held. This sends the message that eSports is reaching the stage of professional sports leagues.  People who do not play the game may be drawn to it through watching the competitions or being pressured by the popularity of the game. Riot’s value proposition is to create a fair competitive game where players have plenty of room to improve and cannot buy game power with real currency. Overall their success can attributed to a well crafted business model canvas.
