M.S. Position in Food Studies at Syracuse University.

 

Position Description. Graduate research assistant to work under the supervision of Dr. Rick Welsh, Professor of Food Studies (https://falk.syr.edu/people/welshrick/), as part of a National Institute of Food and Agriculture funded Sustainable Agriculture Systems grant.  The position is fully funded for two academic years and includes a 20 hour per week work schedule and stipend and 30 graduate credits leading to a M.S. in Food Studies (https://falk.syr.edu/food-studies/academic-programs/food-studies-ms/).

 

In this project you will work as part of a multidisciplinary and multi-institutional team seeking to understand the feasibility and ecological, economic, social, and political implications of developing micro and macro algae feed supplements (AFS) for dairy cattle to potentially enhance herd health and reduce methane emissions. Our focus is on measuring current organic and conventional farmers’, and other dairy professionals’, understanding and knowledge of AFS to inform the biophysical research on AFS, and develop outreach strategies to inform interested parties of project results as they become available. Applicants should possess a bachelor’s degree and a keen interest in sustainable agriculture systems, including social justice aspects of sustainability which is a significant part of the M.S. in Food Studies at Syracuse University. Quantitative and qualitative training in research methods helpful but not required. Preamble:

 

The University of B.C. Dairy Education and Research Centre is located in Agassiz, 130 km east of the UBC Point Grey Campus.  The farm is required to operate on a financially self-sustaining basis.  In addition to its operation as a fully functioning dairy (milk) production enterprise, the Centre plays a unique role as a centre for research, teaching, and technology transfer relating to dairy and forage production, agronomic crops and practices, and soils.  These activities involve active participation by faculty members and students from U.B.C. and other universities, government specialists, industry groups, and individuals.

 

Primary Function:

 

To assist the farm staff in all duties relating to the dairy herd.  Due to the nature of the position, some scheduling of duties on weekends and holidays is anticipated.  In addition, the time required to perform the duties of the position is expected to vary from day to day.

 

Organizational Relationship:

 

The worker reports to the Manager.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • To assist with day-to-day operations of the dairy herd
  • Assistance with milking, feeding of animals, haying or other
  • Assistance with research projects related to the dairy herd

Education and Training:

  • Post-secondary agricultural education an asset

Carl Hunt Scholarship from the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) 

Pacific North West American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) chapter is offering scholarships to undergraduate students attending university in one of the states or provinces our groups covers.

ARPAS is an organization of professionals engaged in the practice of animal science through research, education, extension, consulting, service, or production.  Its members have completed an examination process and are certified for their expertise in their fields of animal science.  A Pacific Northwest Chapter of ARPAS was formed, primarily comprised of industry and university animal scientists interested in promoting the advancement of their profession.

A scholarship has been formed by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of ARPAS for Upper-class (juniors and seniors) students with an interest in a career in the animal sciences.  The scholarship is comprised of an award of $1,000 and recognition at the Pacific Northwest ARPAS meeting held at the annual Pacific Northwest Animal Nutrition Conference.

The date for next year’s annual meeting will be January 16th-17th, 2023.  The PNW Chapter recently renamed this Scholarship to ‘The Carl Hunt Memorial Scholarship’ to pay tribute to all of the countless contributions, Dr. Hunt made to our PNW ARPAS chapter, especially in developing undergraduates students for productive careers in the Animal Sciences.

Job opportunity – Greyhaven Parrot Refuge, Delta BC

We currently have a part time position for a hard working, energetic and outgoing individual for our South Delta location. This is a physically demanding role; you must be comfortable being on your feet and on the move for the duration of your day and be able to lift 40lbs.

Duties include but not limited to:

Feeding and care of parrots of all species

Administering medications, weighing birds, basic exams

Cage cleaning

General shelter cleaning, sweeping and mopping floors, laundry, dishes and food preparation

Working with volunteers providing training and guidance

The ideal candidate has some animal care experience in a shelter, veterinarian clinic or rescue environment. The ability to interact positively with a volunteer workforce is critical to the success of this role. The shift hours will include weekday and weekends – days only, no overnight shifts required.
