2025 Agroecology Summer Research Fellowship Open to USA Citizens

(This is only open to USA citizens.)

Institute for Agroecology at the University of Vermont are still accepting applications for the 2025 Agroecology Extension (AX) Summer Research Fellowship, an educational initiative that links undergraduate students from across the country to research and outreach projects at UVM, through our summer Research and Extension Experience for Undergraduates.

The AX Program offers a 10-week immersive work experience that weaves together personal and professional growth in the context of agroecology through labor, learning, and community engagement. The program is open to undergraduates from across the US. It is a collaboration between UVM Extension and the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and led by the Institute for Agroecology on UVM’s main campus in Burlington, VT. This fellowship is designed for students who seek to deepen their knowledge of sustainable agricultural approaches and to develop transdisciplinary research and outreach skills. It will match undergraduate fellows with UVM faculty, staff, and graduate students engaged in a variety of applied research and outreach projects that include pest management, agroforestry, fruit tree farming, and sustainable cropping systems.

The AX Program offers a deeply embodied approach to agroecology, engaging Fellows in multiple dimensions of learning and development. This includes mind-body awareness integrated with hands-on agricultural work. Fellows participate in mindful observation, reflective practices, and experiential learning while also engaging in the physical aspects of agricultural research and farm work. This means being prepared for fieldwork in various weather conditions on commercial and research farms, such as weeding, soil sampling, scouting. Through this integration of mind and body, Fellows develop a more complete understanding of agroecological systems and their own role within them.

Program logistics:

The AX Fellowship starts May 27, 2025, and runs for 10 weeks (through August 1, 2025)

Students will receive a $4,500 stipend.

On-campus housing is provided.

Takes place on-site at UVM’s Catamount Farm and in the field (much of our field work requires some physical stamina and may be conducted in a variety of weather conditions).

Project locations are dependent upon mentor’s research and outreach.

Personal transportation is preferred but not required.

Applications will be accepted through the UVM InfoReady Portal until the program is full.
