The Institute for Sustainable Food Systems at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is looking for a student or recent graduate (last 2 years) intern to work in our hazelnut and pome fruit alley cropping projects for 6 months, 10-15 hours per week, located in Richmond BC. Pay is between 23-25 $/hour depending on experience.
About the position:
The Institute for Sustainable Food Systems conducts applied research and provides extension programming focused on fostering regional and deeply sustainable farming and food systems. Alley cropping is a productive agroforestry practice that integrates fruit and nut trees with intercrops. The intern will mainly be responsible for maintenance of demonstration plots over the growing season (mowing, weeding, mulching, irrigation), and assist with harvest, data collection, and end of season tasks. The intern will also log management activities, and assist with background research, and report writing.
Required experience:
The intern should have some field work experience, enjoy working on the farm, and have some basic familiarity with farm machinery, though training will be provided.
