Tec de Monterrey – Internships in Sustainable Development – Mexico
Tecnológico de Monterrey (Tec) is offering 8-week Summer Internship Program on Sustainable Development in Mexico during the summer of 2016. Students will work alongside Yale, M.I.T, Harvard, and Tec students on specific Sustainable Development projects in rural communities in southern and central Mexico. Internship opportunities vary by site, see below for details.
Students will be placed at their choice of the following community development project sites during the summer of 2016:
- Otongo community, Hidalgo (Public Health, Education) – Hidalgo Internships 2016
- Queretero (Environmental Sustainability) – Queretero Internships 2016
Participants will learn firsthand the culture of the region, understand the values and principles governing the working and living, enjoy some of the life, flavors, and music of Mexico, and be able to identify the basis for sustainable community development in a complex and culturally rich society.
Program Logistics
The 2016 program will run from May 28 to July 31. Upon arrival in Mexico, students will travel to their project sites where they will receive a cultural orientation. Each student will be paired with a Mexican student from the Tec, have a faculty supervisor from the Tec’s local campuses, and live in student dormitories on campus or with local families. A concluding session allow students to present about their projects.
Eligibility
- UBC students from all programs are eligible
- Intermediate or advanced knowledge of Spanish required.
Costs
- The cost of the program is $1150 USD paid to Tec de Monterrey
- This fee includes:
- Registration fee
- Housing
- most meals (varies by site)
- transportation within Mexico (related to the projects)
Not included in this fee:
- Airfare to Mexico is not included
- Some Meals (varies by site)
- Prospective participants should also take into account the cost of any personal travel that they might wish to undertake over the weekends during their stay in Mexico, as well as miscellaneous expenses for entertainment, snacks, etc.
- International health insurance
Eligible UBC participants will be eligible for a Go Global Internship Award of $2000.00.
Application process and materials
Applications are due by Monday April 11, 2016.
Required application materials include the following:
- 1-page personal statement describing student’s personal goals for the experience, what skills or contributions you they bring to the experience, and the basis of their interest in Mexico and/or issues of sustainable development
- Current C.V. or resume
