Youth Engagement Intern, FOOD and NUTRITION

 

Job Description

The West 1 community of schools is seeking several energetic and organized individuals to be responsible for delivering after-school food and nutrition/ cooking programs for school-aged children at a number of Westside elementary schools this 2013-2014 school year.

 

As part of the West 1 Community School Team (CST), the Youth Engagement Intern(s) will organize, mentor, and collaborate with high school leaders to design and deliver quality food and nutrition programs for elementary students.

 

With direction and support from the CST, the Intern(s) will administer all aspects of the programs they design, from delegating responsibilities to youth leaders to lesson planning, organizing nutrition-based games and activities, selecting recipes, supervising children, recording and monitoring participation levels, liaising with teachers and parents. He/she will be given a complete set of lesson plans (recipes and nutrition-related activities) to use as a template for their own lessons.

 

Interns should be prepared to commit to at least one afternoon per week (usually from 3:00-5:00pm) for a minimum of 7 weeks for program delivery, and one hour per week for preparation.

 

Skills Required

-Post-secondary studies, preferably with a concentration in food and nutrition sciences;

-Strong organizational and group leadership skills;

-Ability to problem-solve and multitask;

-Excellent oral and written communication skills;

-Experience working with school-aged and/or high school students;

-Interest and background in healthy food preparation, food security, and outreach.

-Project design, lesson planning, implementation, and evaluation;

-Team building and leadership skills;

-Healthy child development practices, age appropriate lesson planning, behaviour management;

-Role modeling and youth empowerment; and

There are currently 10 Youth Engagement Intern positions available with the Vancouver School Board’s West 1 Community Schools Team in the category of Food and Nutrition.

Hours Per Week

Winter term programs will run once per week from 3:00-5:00pm for a period of 7 weeks (between February and April 2014). Possibility of internship extension/ employment.

LFS 302 Summer Field Studies in Indonesia Info Session (rescheduled)– Jan 8th

LFS 302B Summer 2014 Field Studies Course will be an undergraduate food and resource economics summer field course in Indonesia consists of instruction, planning and implementation of a performance assessment or monitoring and evaluation (M&E) methodology.  The specific methodology, Monitoring & Evaluation for Timely Responses (METR), uses experiential learning (real-world examples) to provide students with an effective tool for independent ex-post development project evaluation used by civil society private and public sector professionals.  After a week of instruction, three weeks are spent evaluating an actual development project in Indonesia by a team of students led by the instructor.  Students are assigned tasks to assess project finance & economics, institutional development & governance, or appropriateness of the project science and technology.  The results of all three sub-tasks are used to prepare a final team report.  The minimum size of a student team is 3, the maximum 6 (in pairs according to tasks).

The Real Food Media Contest is seeking short and powerful films–from 30 seconds to four minutes–on food, farming, and sustainability.Contest judges include Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Robert Kenner (Food Inc.), Michael Pollan, Alice Waters, Eric Schlosser, The Food Network’s Padma Lakshmi, Keri Putnam from the Sundance Institute, and Johanna Blakley from University of Southern California, and more. The Contest is a great opportunity to experiment with a short film and get your work in front of some of the film industry’s and sustainable food community’s leading movers and shakers. Richmond Food Security Society Spring/Summer Communications Intern opportunities – due Jan 31

The Richmond Food Security Society is a grassroots non-profit society based out of Richmond working to ensure that everyone has the right to healthy, safe, and sustainable foods.  We are expanding efforts into the diverse communities in our neighbourhoods and are seeking four interns to help support our work.

We are looking for a smart, motivated, and energetic intern to join the Richmond Food Security Society this Spring/Summer. The ideal intern would be a student studying marketing, social sciences, communications, or environmental sciences and have an interest in media communications and sustainable food systems. You are looking to gain experience in research initiatives that further social change among minority and cultural groups in the region.

Four positions are being offered at this time:

  1. Mandarin Speaking Media Intern
  2. Cantonese Speaking Media Intern
  3. Punjabi Speaking Media Intern
  4. Tagalog Speaking Media Intern

 Description:

This person is responsible for compiling and analyzing traditional print and online media for food security and sustainable food related content.

  • Research and analyze various print and online publications (newspaper and magazine articles, editorials, blog posts).  Key research questions include:
    • What are other jurisdictions doing (in the field of food security work?)
    • What has the local cultural media in the lower mainland said about this?
    • Which outlets (and journalists) have written about the topic?
    • What tone did they take? Positive or negative?
    • What’s being said online?
    • Where are journalists or media contributors going for their information? What are their sources?
  • Summarize key findings and perform detailed analyses of the way in which food issues and food security work are depicted in the media landscape of relevance
  • Foster and build relationships with media outlets in the Lower Mainland
  • Attend bi-weekly team meetings with Richmond Food Security Society staff

Desired Qualifications

  • Fluent in one or more of the following: Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, or Tagalog
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A passion for, and experience in research and media analysis
  • Experience in working with community groups and/or non-profit organizations
  • Familiarity with social media
  • Professional and organized; ability to meet deadlines
  • Proactive attitude
  • Strong team player

UBC Students and alumni are asked to register in advance for this
session. If you are not currently a UBC student, please join the event
anyway but know that space is limited.
