Nov 21: Lecture on Genetically Engineered Foods and Human Health

When: Thursday Nov. 21, 2:00-4:00pm

Where: The Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS), 2260 West Mall, U.B.C.

What: This event will provide opportunities for the public to discuss their concerns regarding GE foods. This lecture is part of a Cross-Canada Speaker’s Tour on Genetically Engineered Foods and Human Health. The tour features presentations by Dr. Thierry Vrain, and Dr. Shiv Chopra. Dr. Vrain and Dr. Chopra will address the topic of GE foods and human health from both a scientific and a regulatory perspective.

Undergraduate Students Needed for an Online Survey

Research Project: Processes by which Responses to Disclosures of Violence are shaped by Relationship Context

This research is looking to learn about peer relationships and how violent experiences are shared in these relationships. The goal is to help improve services to students and those impacted by violence.

What’s Involved?

  • Completing an online survey that is expected to take 30 minutes of your time.
  • You will be entered in a draw to win 1 of 5 iPods.

 Who is invited?

  • Undergraduate students aged 17 to 24.

Nov 14 – Info session and get-together for Applied Biology students

Food, Fun and Information for APBI students!

Thursday, November 14, from 5 – 7pm in Agora, the Applied Biology Program is holding the first in a series of “get-togethers” for students and faculty in the Applied Biology program.  This event will focus on opportunities for students to enrich their academic experience beyond the classroom.  Brief presentations will be given by representatives of UBC Go Global, UBC Farm, UBC Career Services, UBC Pre-vet/Animal Welfare Club, Life Sciences Co-op, UBC Community Learning Initiative, and others.  After the presentations everyone is invited to stay, mingle, and enjoy the food and drink.

Info session on International Reading Week opportunties

Looking for a way to apply your academic knowledge in a community-based setting?   There are a number of Reading Week (Feb. 2014) opportunities that can help you do just that!

Sustainability & Solidarity is an International Service Learning opportunity that allows students to work and learn alongside a community organization in rural Mexico that works on agricultural and ecological initiatives such as dry toilet installation into neighboring communities where access to sanitation facilities is limited.  Learning sessions about the factors and issues surrounding this project are integrated throughout the week.

Sustainability and  Coastal Conservation is an International Service Learning opportunity to work with a NGO along the Caribbean coast in Costa Rica.  This project is to work with ASVO is to make the station as self-sustainable as possible, in order to reduce impacts on the local habitat and provide a model for nearby communities and international volunteers. You will contribute to this goal by helping to build a greenhouse on the site to assist in reducing the need to bring in outside sources of food to the site and increase the diversity of plant species (vegetables) available for local consumption.

Ecosystems and Ecology is an International Service Learning opportunity to work with a NGO along the Caribbean coast in Costa Rica.  This project is to work with ASVO is to make the station as self-sustainable as possible, in order to reduce impacts on the local habitat and provide a model for nearby communities and international volunteers. You will contribute to this goal by helping to construct a water filtration system that will harvest both rain and salt water to provide volunteers and the surrounding community with a sustainable source of clean drinking water. You should expect hands-on work, manual labour, and the need to problem-solve in the field.
