FNH students participate in Provincial Mission ImPULSEible Competition
On March 18, some students in our Food, Nutrition and Health (FNH) program participated in the 2013 BC Provincial Championship Pulse Canada Mission ImPULSEible food development competition. The students gathered in Vij’s Kitchen, located in our FNH building, to present their creations.
The contest was judged by Christine Farcas (Pulse Canada), Dominique and Cindy Duby (artisan chocolate-makers and owners of Wild Sweets), Judy Chan (sectional lecturer in FNH and faculty associate at the Center for Teaching Learning and Technology) and Melissa Salas (Culinary Chef and current FNH undergraduate student).
The Mission: ImPULSEible food development competition was created by Pulse Canada in 2009 as a way to get university and college students interested in using pulses and pulse ingredients in the development of new food products. Pulses are the “edible seeds of plants in the legume family” (Pulse Canada, 2013).
Provincial prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams in the amounts of $1000, $650 and $350 respectively. Jeffrey Ma, Claudia Ting and Marco Tang were selected as the winning provincial team and will have the opportunity to present their innovative pulse food products to a panel of judges at the national M:I event, held in conjunction with the Canadian Special Crops Association annual convention in Calgary in June 2013.
The results were as follows:
- Bean’n Butter – UBC FNH students Jeffrey Ma, Claudia Ting and Marco Tang
- Pulse Crunch – UBC FNH students Debbie Song, Kylene Tiu and Joy Lim
- Pulse Pops – UBC FNH students Isis Liang, Arisa Thamsuaidee and Jenny Ng
- neabisk – UBC FNH student Anna Cheung
