Lights on the Roof – Dec 2, 2016

Come one come all! Roots on the Roof is hosting a lantern festival at the Rooftop Garden on the 4th floor of the AMS Nest.

Featuring student made lanterns, interactive art pieces, musical performances, and food; Lights on the Roof is a celebration that aims to explore how the garden and food can be experienced in our communities.

Join us for a cozy & festive evening on the rooftop garden!

Faculty Sponsorship for 2017 SLC Registration | Apply by November 27th

The Faculty of Land and Food Systems is invested in the leadership development of students within our Faculty. As part of this investment, we are offering partial sponsorship of LFS students who wish to attend the 2017 UBC Student Leadership Conference (SLC), which will be held on the Vancouver campus on Saturday, January 7, 2017.

The SLC is one of the largest student-led conferences in North America, mixing peer-, alumni- and professional-led concurrent sessions, well-known keynote speakers, and innovative programming to deliver an informative and inspirational conference experience. You can learn more about the SLC by visiting slc.ubc.ca.

If you are interested in attending the SLC and the $40 registration fee is cost prohibitive, we invite all students to apply for partial funding to cover 50% of the registration fee ($20) by following the instructions below.

Requirements

  • You are an undergraduate OR graduate student registered in the Faculty of Land & Food Systems;
  • You plan to attend the full day of programming on Saturday, January 7th(9am-5pm);
  • Submit your completed application form before 11:59pm on Sunday, November 27th, 2016.

If you meet these requirements and wish to apply, please compose a short 300-400 word letter outlining why you are interested in attending the SLC, how it will support you in your pursuit of personal and professional development, and how your attendance will have a positive influence on the Faculty (i.e. how might you apply your conference experience to benefit Faculty-related programming).

Canadian Global Health Students and Young Professionals Summit – Nov 12/13, 2016

The Student and Young Professional Global Health Summit aims to give space to students and young professionals (SYPs) involved or interested in the global health field. This is the forum for global health SYPs to connect, network, engage, and be inspired.

Leading experts as well as outstanding SYPs will question what the upcoming global health challenges of our time and report on what Canadians are doing in this arena.

Participants will also be challenged to think about their career paths through workshops focused on global health mentorship and a panel who will speak about their sometimes winding global health career path.

Saturday, November 12 – Sunday, November 13, 2016

The event features leading global health practitioners from around the globe, including Dr. Michael Clarke (Former Director of Research on Health Equity at IDRC), Dr. Charles Larson (National Coordinator of the Canadian Coalition for Global Health Research), Dr. Rohit Ramchandani (Founder and CEO of Antara Global Health Advisors), Dr. Janet Hatcher Roberts (Co-Director, WHO Collaborating Centre for Knowledge Translation and Health Technology Assessment in Health Equity), Dr. Donald Sutherland (Senior Advisor, Canadian Society for International Health), Dr. Mark Anserimo (Director, Centre for International Child Health, BC Children’s Hospital), Maggie Woo Kinshella (Cuso International), and more.

** Registered attendees are also invited to an exclusive consultation with our Parliamentary Secretary, Karina Gould, on November 14, 2016, to discuss Canadian youth priorities in global health.

Agora is offering a FoodSafe 2 course on November 19th 10am-4pm and November 21st 5:30pm-9:30pm.

Let’s Talk Science Mentorship Program – Training Nov 10, 2016

VOLUNTEER FOR LET’S TALK SCIENCE’S HIGH SCHOOL MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

For several years, Let’s Talk Science UBC has run a program in conjunction with local Vancouver schools to form mentoring relationships between high school students working on science fair projects and UBC students and researchers.

As a volunteer you will help all the way from designing research questions and their experiments to seeing them present their results at an actual Science Fair.

Project aims: Our aim is to show these kids how fantastic science is. We want to demonstrate that science is much more than just sitting in a lab with a white coat and a pipette and those scientists are awesome people like you!

Call for volunteers

Who: Undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs and researchers

Location: Britannia Secondary School. Transportation costs (e.g. gas, car share) will be reimbursed.

Volunteer Role:  Working in groups with other volunteers, your role is to support for your mentee’s science fair project. This includes guidance in designing an experiment, proposing a hypothesis, executing an experimenting, analyzing data, and presenting results.

Training: Thursday 10th November  5-7 pm – Pizza will be provided!

Masters of Food and Resource Economics Info Sessions – Nov 9/10, 2016

The Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE) is hosting two info sessions in November. Join us to learn more about the program!

• Wednesday – Nov 9th, 4:45 – 5:30pm in MCML366
• Thursday – Nov 10th, 4:45 – 5:30pm in BUCH D205

What is MFRE? MFRE is a one year master program: two course based semesters and one summer project. The courses cover the areas of policy analysis, agribusiness, applied economics and quantitative methods.

We would appreciate it if you could email Shristee (shristee.rahman@ubc.ca) to let us know which session you will be attending, although we welcome your attendance even if you have not RSVP’d. Everyone is welcome!

Undecided and not sure where to start?
Stop by the LFS ACE Team’s Discover Your Major event!

The event will feature a panel of speakers consisting of faculty members and senior students, who will discuss and answer questions to help you understand more about the majors within LFS. After the discussion, you will get the opportunity to mingle and chat with academic advisors, student representatives, and faculty members. Get a students’ perspective and experience in a major, explore possible career options, learn more about a major you never knew existed, and start the process of discovering your major. With over 9 majors within Applied Biology, Global Resources and Food, Health, and Nutrition, there is something for everyone!

“Discover your Major” will take place on Tuesday, Nov 22, 2016 from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM.
