I have to take CHEM 111, which conflicts with LFS 100. What do I do?

Students who have not taken Chemistry 12 must take CHEM 111. Please register in any CHEM 111 section and LFS 100 sec 002, a web-oriented section of LFS 100. We are aware of this timetable conflict and are working to resolve this issue for future scheduling.

Students who have credit for Chemistry 12 must take CHEM 121, which does not conflict with LFS 100. Please register in any CHEM 121 section and LFS 100 sec 001.

Registration in each LFS 100 section will be checked for accuracy.

2016 IUFoST World Congress Video Contest – due July 31, 2016 (extended!)

The deadline has been extended from July 5 to July 31, 2016.

To LFS students in food science,

IUFoST is running a video contest for students in conjunction with the 2016 IUFoST World Congress in Dublin. We are hoping to get many entries for this exciting competition, as it will showcase how food science and tech are benefiting communities around the world, from the unique perspective of a student-generated video. We have great prizes, but more importantly, this a plum opportunity for a budding food science student to impress attendees of the Congress with an exclusive premiere of their winning entry.

(Details and rules can be found here: http://iufost.org/iufost-student-video-competition )

*And to sweeten the deal; the Grand Prize (in addition to an exclusive showing and announcement at the IUFoST2016 Congress) is a cool $USD one thousand dollars!*; Not bad for a 5 minute video!

Any student over 18 is eligible to enter. We are excited to see the first entries come in, and hope to get participation from students around the world.

If you have any questions about the contest, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Warm Regards,
Susanna Rosebush

Where can I find my ESP’s contact info and what can I ask them?

All undergraduate students in a degree program have a dedicated ESP to help with things like paying tuition and making a budget to requesting a transcript and changing programs.

Find your Enrolment Service Professional (ESP)’s contact information on the Student Service Centre (SSC) under Personal Info > UBC Contacts. Your ESP can help you in person, or by phone or email.

How come I am not being assessed a registration deposit?

Students are not required to pay the $100 registration deposit if they have a balance/over-payment on their financial account, i.e. you won’t ask for $100 if you already have an overpayment of $500.

You can view your Financial Summary on your Student Service Centre. If you have any questions about your tuition, please contact your ESP – unfortunately your academic advising office does not have access to this! Don’t know who your ESP is? Find out here

Apply to be a 2016 UBC Navigator! | Final deadline June 4th

As an LFS Navigator, you are a key member of the orientation teams welcoming and supporting students in their transition to UBC. Working collectively with the Science Navigator team, LFS Navigators will be some of the first faces students see when they’re arriving on campus during the first week; the service is a timely, on-demand support for students who are learning about our campus and how to get to their classes. LFS Navigators provide one-on-one transactional support to find buildings and classrooms on campus.

As an LFS Navigator, you can expect to:

Support new-to-UBC students through their first week

Transition programming in the Faculty of Land & Food Systems is designed to support new-to-UBC students throughout their first term. One important facet of the transition is assisting students in their first week at UBC by providing directions to find campus buildings and classrooms.

Engage in personal and professional skill development

This encompasses:

  • Developing competencies in areas including communication, teamwork, team building, analysis and problem solving, initiative and motivation, willingness to learn and adaptability.

Role model outstanding student leadership on campus

This encompasses:

  • Embracing the role as an ambassador for student leadership and as a representative of the Faculty of Land & Food Systems.
  • Understanding the role that a Navigator Leader plays within a larger scope of leadership on the UBC Vancouver campus.
  • Actively participating as a member of a larger community of leadership across the UBC Vancouver campus.

Time commitment

  • Attend mandatory training sessions (September 3, 2016 – Labour Day weekend)
These training sessions conflict with the orientation leader training – you cannot hold positions as both an Imagine Orientation Leader and an LFS Navigator.
  • Attend Imagine UBC on September 6, 2016
  • Assist with Science & LFS Navigation Stations during the first week of classes in September.
    • At least 10-15 hours, based on your availability

Apply now!

Application deadline for the final set of interviews is Sunday June 12, 11:59 PM. Interviews will be hosted in the last two weeks of June.
