Genocide vs. Mass Killing Lesson

In this lesson created for Genocide Studies 12, Sean effectively broke down a rather tough reading by Gavin Moore for students. He was a very quick study and presented the mini-lesson with ease and comfort! His tone of voice and lesson pacing was very effective. Well done Sean!

He showed two videos, one of the Armenian Genocide and one of the Khmer Rouge in order to help the students have a visual representation of what Gavin Moore considers a genocide and a mass killing. The students then understood that in the Khmer Rouge the perpetrators aimed to reconstruct Cambodian society, oppressing and ‘re-educating’ those who were spared death and that the Armenian Genocide was aimed at exterminating Christian Armenians due to their religion.

The students then moved to their Venn Diagram and with Sean’s assistance they broke down the intent and motive of a mass killing versus a genocide. This really helped the students understand the reading, as Gavin Moore argues that the term Genocide be reserved as an act with no equal with needed moral gravity.

This would be a great activity to use before or after reading the text, linked below.

Gregg Whitlock

Simran did an outstanding job presenting on her topic. I was impressed with the level of detail she contributed to her handouts, although she could have included some visuals in her materials to improve the level of engagement. Otherwise, I was impressed with her calm and soothing teacher voice. She is confident and poised for success.

Assignment 2 Owen Zhu

I presented my own text and graphic organizer to the group due to some miscommunication. Mine was about the structure of an atom. The graphic organizer helps students gain a visual understanding of an atom by drawing out the three subatomic particles – electron, proton and neutron. Jay Michalak/Jackie Nguyen

Jackie did an outstanding job bringing the relatively complicated musical performance strategy of phrasing to life in a fun, engaging and highly effective manner.  She paced the lesson extremely well and provided answers and scaffolding as necessary.  She also employed the organizer to great effect and it would definitely serve as a reference tool for future lessons in the unit. Brava!

Assignment #2 – Compare and Contrast for Social Studies

My partner James did a stellar job delivering the graphic organizer and the contents of the article to the group. The organizer is really meant for students to critically analyze and closely read the article, then outline the main arguments between the two sides. It is a great beginning activity for students to get used to the idea of what ethics are when it comes to the Social Studies curriculum.

The news article is the main content piece for students to compare and contrast on an ethical (and contentious) topic. Can work for most grades in Social Studies, depending on what the end assessment is.

My partner Dena T. did a great job explaining the content of the document. She organized the lesson, got the group members to explore meanings of unknown words and fill their personal dictionary.  She then got them to identify the different elements of a post card with the help of the graphic organizer.
