RE: Ads to be Tailored by Facial Recognition
Dina’s blog post is indeed an amusing concept, that upon better consideration could also be controversial. From personal experience, I have only come across touch screen kiosks, and had previously found them to be useful and sufficiently new in technology.
This however, has taken everything to a new level, and it shows how technological innovations can sometimes outrun the consumer. This may bring different reactions to certain groups, and yet I agree that most people might find this intrusive. Perhaps the technology used in this case might not be appropriate for this situation. Nevertheless, the fact that these kiosks have already been implemented in the US and Japan show that there is a degree of success to the futuristic ideas behind them.
And yet, looking at this from the point of view of advertisers, it is quite clear that it is an innovative and new idea to be “exposed” to the consumer.
Expanding on Dina’s concern about intrusion of consumers’ preferences, it could also be said that the systems of facial recognition would be narrowing down people to certain categories, and judging only based on their gender and age seems slightly outdated comparing to the technology that is involved in the creation of such a product.
