#003: Of books, buses and breakfast

Currently listening to: “Kiss You Off” – Scissor Sisters

So…I got the job at Indigo! It’s quite funny really; half the week I’m persuading people to take out as many books as they could possibly want to read for free, and the other half of the week I’ll be trying to make people pay for as many books (and other trinkets) as I can possibly sell them. Thank goodness I have no principles whatsoever.

In other news, two days more to the start of school and such; it’s really quite exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time. I shall look forward with great excitement to the hour-and-a-half-long commute; the mere thought thrills me to no end. You will soon learn that I am supremely easily amused: while donning the Arts students’ requisite purple robes, I will probably be the one kid sitting there, being incredibly entertained by watching people from various faculties walking around in gigantic colour-blocks.

Anyhow,

Kellogg’s All Bran Strawberry Medley owns my life right now.
It’s probably one of the most amazing breakfast (and lunch, and dinner) food I’ve eaten in recent years. The strawberry clusters are absolutely to die for, and the chunks of dried strawberry are heavenly. Oh, the cereal bits are pretty good, too. Bottom line: try it, it’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and better for you than other addictive substances.

I’ll be back to haunt you some more soon. Till then, tally ho, pip pip, guv’nor!

#002: Count with me!

Currently listening to: “Role of a Lifetime”- bare: A Pop Opera

Three days left ’till the beginning of the pick-your-own adventure book I like to call UBC!

I suppose it’d only be polite if I did a real and proper introduction; goodness knows the bits and bobs I leave lying around can be confusing as I struggle to keep up with my train of thought (which, like time and tide, wait for no man).

I’m Mary, as you might have figured out by now. Born and bred in Singapore, I moved to North Vancouver in 2005 with my family on one of my father’s whims. As they say…good times. I’ve been struck by wanderlust and it’s my personal goal to travel to every Canadian province by the end of 2010 before spreading my wings to another corner of the world. (Great Britain would be quite pleasant, I believe.) I don’t know what else you might want to know about me, so feel free to ask, or simply check out the “About” page; the random tidbits of information should keep you well entertained.

In other news, I had a walk-in interview at the Marine Drive branch of Indigo today. I’ve been looking for a second job for ages now; my job at the North Vancouver District Public Library (Lynn Valley Main) has been positively delightful, but some extra income would be perfect – just the thing to fuel my next cross-Canada adventure! Hopefully that went well; I’ll be hearing from them by the end of next week, so I’m keeping my fingers and toes well crossed.

More inane natterings in a bit; I’m rather hungry and dinner awaits.

#001: One step at a time…

*This entry is backdated

Currently listening to: “Plus Rien” – Les Cowboys Fringants

A horde of intoxicated rhinoceroses have just clattered and clunked their way into my room through the open window and over the desk. They’re essentially a noisier, more mobile, and more persistent to-do list. While stampeding back and forth over the remnants of the reading-desk, they wave handmade signs saying, “Deal with scholarships!”, “Breathe!”, and “Buy chartreuse spiral-bound notebooks!”

After being sufficiently confused by such a bizarre sight and questioning their liberal usage of the exclamation mark, I realize that I probably ought to take their advice to heart. I mean, if you were confronted with placard-bearing wildlife, you’d probably do a double-take, and then speechlessly follow their instructions, wouldn’t you?

The point is that there’s truth in their words. I ought to deal with scholarships. I ought to get organized. And by Jove, do I ever need to keep breathing. Knowing me, I’ll end up a panicky mess on the ground, tearing my hair out and gnawing on bits of woodchips if my procrastinating tendencies keep up. Ergo, I’m taking little steps in tearing myself from my beloved Olympic coverage (Gymnastics, anyone?) and baking (pre-made Pilsbury cookie dough for the hopeless). With planner in hand and other attempts to be sensible, I’ll be heading off to get all that good old administrative drabble done tomorrow. With any luck, that’ll reduce the beaver-like hysterics which shall settle in quite nicely when I realize that there’s nary a week left to the beginning of a new school year.

That’s not to say that I’m not excited. Oh, you can bet your top hat I’m excited. Like a red helium-filled balloon taking to the vast blue skies, I’m totally ready to make a messy, colourful, Mary-sized splotch on the giant canvas UBC has to offer. In fact, you know what? Surprise me, UBC. Toss your best oddities at me. Toss me into a Fingerpainting 101 class. What, a Fingerpainting-and-Biochemistry amalgamation? I’ll give it my best shot. Firstweek? I’m definitely there with bells on. Keep the rhinoceroses out! Start writing in those chartreuse notebooks! Let the madness begin!

Oh, is this year ever poised to be a veritable bucket of adventures.
