Biography

My name is Max and I’m a third year Philosophy major at UBC. My academic interests include all of the major branches of philosophy, such as epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics, but if I had to pick a favourite, I am most intrigued by the moral problems and questions posed by philosophy. I think that through ethics we begin to see the practical side of philosophy as it helps us set a course towards right action. In other words, discussions about ethics can help us determine the nature of morality, which in turn tells us the way in which we should behave and treat one another. If there is one philosophical opinion I hold, it is that the presence of a recognized moral code among members of society is the only path to social harmony.

Professionally speaking, I am interested in a career in finance. After graduation, I intend to write the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) exams. Ideally, I would like to become a portfolio manager, the person responsible for making investment decisions on behalf of clients. The last two summers I have worked at a Canadian Chartered Bank in their wealth management division, and I intend to further pursue work in this field. Although a degree in philosophy has already challenged me to become a better writer, English 301 has opened me up to the technical side of writing, an invaluable skills as I progress in my professional career.
