Hello world,

A friend of mine recently reminded me of my neglect to update my blog in the recent weeks. Truth is, I haven’t really been up to much. Reading break was Seattle and Boarding. (I miss the Olympics) But now that school is underway, my life consists of going to class and then going to Koerner. I figured a posts on “best study seats in Koerner” or “why Koerner should have longer hours” doesn’t really interest anyone. But after giving a bit more thought (and with the help of some awesome readers), a blitz of topics come to mind. Look forward in coming weeks for posts on: summer trips, snowboards, zipcar, volunteering in a lab, vancouver advisory panels, housing, Vancouver Sun Run, restaurant reviews.

That’s right, UBC Blog Squad, I am back!

Sincerely,
Melanie

Why hello, Arts Career Expo!

The entire evening I resisted to urge to introduce myself as a second year arts student, undeclared major. My name tag with “Faculty of Science” seemed to be screaming among the sea of arts this and arts that. Possibly one of only science students attending the event (along with fellow blog squad and Integrated Sciences major Tyler), I had a surprisingly awesome and informative night at the ARTS CAREER EXPO. I initially heard of the event through a friend, the lovely Jonathan Tang aka logistics, who promised me mouth watering, delectable food. A well spent $5, I might add. The evening not only uphold to its promise of delicious goodies, but the panels and speakers definitely captured this science student’s interest.

I attended: “The social network: Careers in Media and Communications” as well as “I don’t object to careers in law: Careers in Law.

One of the reason I am blogging about this event is a result to a comment of one of the panelist in the “Social Network” session. Mr. Rick Chung, (Broadcast Journalist, BCIT Broadcast Journalism/CBC Radio-Canada/RickChung.com) was commenting on social media and the use of blogs, more specifically maintaining active blogs. And then it sorta struck me that I, in fact, had a blog. His tips on blogging really gave me some insight and inspiration on updating and adding more life to my own. Although as a science student, the advice on careers in media and communications may not necessarily apply to me directly, I do appreciate the general tips and take home messages of the panelist on networking, which is an asset to any career.

The session “Careers in Law” made it apparent to me that a career in law is not in my future. Is that weird that I have been to fifty bazillion of this sort of event for careers in health care… Listen to professionals speak on their background, medicine and their jobs, and it NEVER fails to capture my interest every single time. But less than an hour, discussing careers in law and I was so jet set to get out of that room. Don’t get me wrong, the panelists were AMAZING, they did a terrific job and I do respect them and their profession. Their stories were captivating and I am certain that their advice was enjoyed by many participants and pre-law students in the session, but again, just not for me (in the most respectful way). And isn’t this what ACE is all about? Discovering the possibilities- what you are interested in as well as NOT interested in. I am somewhat disappointed that I was unable to attend iKonnect 2011 (the science career event) which fell during the exact same time as ACE (next year iKonnect 2012). But then again, there is only so many ways of saying pre-med. I am going to end with a quote:

Ask any science student what they hope to pursue after undergrad, 85% of the time, the reply is med school. Ask any art student what they hope to pursue after undergrad, and the possibilities are endless.

This event really opened my mind to the variety of careers choices with a BA. Thumbs up for the Arts Career Expo! Kudos to the ACE 2011 Student Planning Committee!

A Collection of Times Before Finals…

Currently at Koerner library. Starving and down to my last orange. Need to go home to make dinner soon, but I refuse to give up my hard earned spot! (Hey I was here as soon as the library opened this morning). Guess everyone here in the silent study area will have to put up with my grumbling tummy. So I realize I haven’t blogged in a while and after 6 straight hours of biology today, I thought I take a productive break from the wonderful world of cell biology and upload a few pictures. There, quick and easy, now it looks like I’ve put some effort into this blog. 🙂 Tis all for now. Good luck with finals everybody! <3

But the past week has been insanely busy with social stuff. The thing is, I made so many plans with people during exam week just because I never thought I would made it to reading break alive. Alas, reading break came and my social calender was jam pack! Can’t complain, had so much FUN!!!

But finally back home and it’s good to be back. Visited my high school, catch up with some HS teachers, hang out with old high school friends I haven’t seen since grad, wake up at noon everyday, play video games with my brother, cheer on Canada in the OLYMPICS, enjoy being legal, drive my car, loving the snow… all the little things in life I miss while at university.

Although I gotta admit, I feel somewhat guilty, as I haven’t touched a single textbook or anything for over a week. Guess I should be studying/catching up with my school work since more midterms are scheduled as soon as reading break is done. Sigh.

Playtime’s over?

CSP’s Got Talent

(Sorry kinda overdue)

Once upon a time, in the land of UBC, within the Faculty of Science exists a program unlike any other. Where approximately 168 talented individuals come together to form a first year science program of awesomeness, otherwise known as CSP or the Coordinated Science Program. Now within this awesome group lies an even awesomer (is that a word) group, commonly referred to as CSP council. The council recognize the hidden potential of each and every single individual and wanted to show the world how talented CSP is. So they got together and brainstorm ideas. THE RESULT?

CSP's Got Talent

When: Friday, January 15th

Where: Ladha

Who: Featuring CSP students and professors

SUCCESS! Thanks to all those who came out, put up with my lame MC skills and annoying yo mamma/knock knock jokes. So many talented performers from nun chucks to singing to martial arts. You guys ROCK.

Yes, CSP’s definitely GOT TALENT!

HIT the slopes

First weekend back to school is infamously know for it’s ski trips and this year is no exception. It’s obviously time to hit the slopes and shred some powder. Except…ohhh maybe, I’ve never snowboard before in my life. This promises to be a tres interesting weekend filled with plenty of falls, sore butts and aching bones.

Because I’m heading out to Silver Star Mountain Resort with all the wonderful people from SSA (Singapore Student Association). I failed to do my research back in October as I assumed Silver Star would be somewhere by Whistler-ish. Big Joke. Turns out, it’s over 8-ish hours away from UBC by Vernon. H#S7%^*VSS WHAAAAAT??? I’m gonna be spending more time on the bus than on the slopes. Stay positive. I’m sure the bus ride will be fun. As the quote goes, “Sometimes the journey is more rewarding then the destination.”

A little preview of my weekend:

New Moon Gave Me A Massive Migraine Headache

& I honestly don’t know what the fuss is all about. I feel like a pedophile every time Taylor Lautner (aka Jacob) comes on. He’s ONLY 17. Doesn’t really help when everyone in the crowd “oohs” and “ahhhs” every time Jacob takes off his shirt. We went to the 7:30 show at the Scotiabank theatre downtown. Of course it was jammed packed with preteen girls. Thank god I didn’t see any of those “Team Edward”, “Team Jacob” shirts. Should have known better than to show up 30 minutes before the movie, we were stuck with those so-close-to-the-screen seats that my neck still aches today. I liked Twilight, but 2 hours of New Moon, for me, was too much. Too mushy gushy. Too lovely dovey.

Should have watched UFC last night instead.

The Master Procrastinator

School hasn’t even begun but the master procrastinator is already hard at work.

This is what happens when you procrastinate: hanging out with people.

No, I am not a hermit. No, I don’t consider hanging out with people a chore. But with 2 months of summer, can you really blame me to think that there is plenty of time to spend quality time with each and everyone of my friends and family? So whenever someone wanted to catch a movie or go hiking, my reply would be “Of course, just not tonight. Let’s hang out before I leave for BC.” Well you can guess how the story goes…

.

2 months quickly turned into 4 days and this is what my procrastination has left me with today:

– 4 crammed days of social activities (poor me, eh?)

– 3 um…frustrated friends whom I had to cancel on again. (Sorry guys, you know I still love you)

– 2 empty suitcases waiting to be filled. (uh-oh)

– 1 over tired, soon-to-be university student

Lesson learned: stop procrastinating?!?

…like that’ll ever happen.
