Abstract
Indonesia’s power sector is challenging for renewable energy development. It is a monopoly market, with the utility company remains a dominant key player. It is also agitated by high-carbon-intensity electricity oversupplied from massive coal-fired power plants expansion in the last ten years. This capstone project is a high-level review of green hydrogen market to support Pertamina Geothermal Energy’s green hydrogen initiative by providing insights on potential demand sectors. To add another perspective, the BC hydrogen strategy is also reviewed to identify the potential encouragement from the regulatory.
It starts with a global hydrogen demand review for different sectors. Most of the current global hydrogen demand is from the refinery and industrial sectors. Meanwhile, the future hydrogen market will account for additional demand from the transportation, building, and electricity generation industries. For Indonesia’s context, refinery, industrial feedstock, and electricity generation are considered relevant sectors for the time being. Green hydrogen from water electrolysis production with renewable electricity like geothermal will be valuable to decarbonize those industries. Some current industry players and their hydrogen profiles are collected and visualized to provide valuable insights for PGE.
