Community Field Experience

Posted by in Blog, Experiences

My community field experience took place at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster, BC. I worked closely with the arts programmer to develop and pilot a school workshop in coordination with the New Media Gallery, located in the Anvil Centre. The goal of the workshop was to give students a better understanding of conceptual art, as well as time to work in response to the exhibit “POPart” at the New Media Gallery. Students were guided through the gallery by the curators, and then we moved to the workshop space where…read more

Force and Motion

Posted by in Experiences

After an introduction to Sir Isaac Newton, gravity and the laws of motion, the grade one students and I took to the basketball court. We used a stick, two chairs, a string and a cup with a hole in it to see force and motion in action! We experimented pendulum art, using force, motion, viscosity, gravity, and of course a lot of fun in the process.

Art in Nature

Posted by in Experiences

After previewing and discussing the works of Andy Goldsworthy my students were given an opportunity to respond to his environmental art in our own forest at the school. Students learned about and were allowed to pick any of the invasive species as well as use any of the found materials to create their art piece. As the students were working I took pictures and video to document their thinking and process. A couple of days later I put together a short video for the kids and showed it to them…read more

Cosmic Education

Posted by in Theory

Montessori recognized that the elementary curriculum must build upon the work done in the early childhood years as opposed to being a direct continuation of that work. From ages six to twelve the child has an intense thirst for knowledge and the interconnectedness of all things and people. The child wants to learn about the universe and concepts outside of the prepared environment. It is during this time that the child bridges from concrete to abstract thinking. Montessori believed that “Cosmic Education” was the answer to the characteristics of this…read more

The Construction of Human Beings and Human Tendencies

Posted by in Theory

Construction of the Human Being Montessori says, “The greatness of human personality begins at the hour of birth.” She believes that it is during the early period in life that education must be understood as helping to unfold the child’s “inborn psychic powers”. The Montessori system of education aims, not just to give the child information about the world, but to allow the child’s inner powers to develop to their fullest potential. The interchange between the child and the environment optimizes their potential as human beings. Montessori believed that man…read more

The Role of the Montessori Teacher

Posted by in Blog, Maria montessori, Montessori Method, teacher training, The role of the Montessori Teacher, The role of the teacher

The role of a Montessori teacher is special in so many ways. She thoughtfully prepares the environment to meet the unique needs of the children. She carefully observes and understands when to introduce new materials so that the children may continue to be engaged in the mastery of their work. She must observe and follow the child, giving him opportunities to explore his interests safely and productively. The teacher must recognize the fine balance between challenging the child and gently pushing him towards new material and allowing him to find…read more
