UBC ENGL 301

This is a course about technical writing in which students are expected to write in a professional manner about career-related documents. Such documents include but are not limited to emails, cover letters, resumes, abstracts, proposals, reports. To register in this course, one needs to have at least 3 credits of English courses, but 6 credits are the recommended number of credits. Also, this course is open to students that have at least third-year standing. Section 99 C is an online section offered in Winter 2019 and it has a slightly different format than the in-class version of this course. One noteworthy difference between the in-class and online sections is that the latter has no final exam but there are more assignments throughout the term.

My expectations from this course

This is a course specifically tailored for students in any undergraduate degree that want to get a better understanding of professional writing. One of my major expectations is that of learning how to write a cover letter. Besides that, I would like to learn about how to communicate with my peers and my managers in a company setting via emails. Lastly, it would be a great accomplishment if I would learn about how to improve my LinkedIn profile and about how to edit my resume in such a way that it makes it more readable for my recruiters.

One of my major problems is that I do not have many ending statements for my emails. I usually end my emails with “Best Regards” even when I’m communicating with my family. I would like to learn more ending formulas, and I would like to know which one to use for each setting.

Sometimes I keep my emails very short and concise, but I suppose that my emails lack some key elements. For instance, I would like to learn some greeting/courtesy formulas that I can use in my emails.
