General information about the Vakkerdød

VAKKERØD

There was an Göngugrís man who lived a solitary life in the Alaskan wilderness. He spent most of his days hunting for his meals and simply surviving, and he had a favourite lake to catch his fish. The sun would hit the cold water and make it appear like liquid onyx.

His days consisted of the same repetitive motions. The man woke up with the sun to feed his sled dogs, saying good morning to each of them individually and giving them a scratch behind their ears. Then, he would sit down in front of his fire and pour himself a steaming cup of dark, black coffee and chew on some salted seal jerky.

After his coffee, he would pack his dogsled and harness his dogs up.

On this particular day at the lake, the usually serene lake was rippling with something beneath its surface. The man squinted into the black water, waving his net back and forth but didn’t feel it catch on anything. Just as he leaned back against the rock again, his dogs began howling behind him.

The Göngugrís man shouted at them to be quiet, that they would scare away the fish. But then, once they listened to his command and stopped howling, a thick, eerie silence fell over the lake. Not the usual calm silence that could lull a person to sleep, but the kind of silence that raises a person’s arm hairs and makes them feel as if they’re being watched.

There was a small splash in the water and the man leaned forward again to investigate. As he focused his gaze into the dark waters, he spotted something blurring beneath the surface. Something large and colourful. Colours that did not belong anywhere in the ecosystem. He moved closer, trying to catch another look at this new beast, but as he got onto his stomach, a sharp pain pierced through his chest and travelled down his arms and legs, stiffening his body like a board.

As blood filled his vision, he saw a beautiful woman slither up along the bank of the lake and blink black eyes at him. An onyx tongue slithered over her thin lips just before the man seized and his brain died.
