Hi Everyone! Welcome to my blog.

English 301 is an online course on Technical Writing offered in UBC. This course educates students about the protocols and techniques for professional and technical writing. It aims to empower students to tackle issues and opportunities posed by changing technologies and globalized communication across contexts and cultures

The primary mode of instruction will be the Instructor’s blog by Dr Erika Paterson, which will guide the students through the course readings and provide feedback. Most readings will be assigned from “Technical Communication, 14th  Edition by John M. Lannon; Laura J. Gurak“.

There are 4 assignments for an external audience; Formal Report addressing a student-chosen problem, an application for either; job, international volunteer position or graduate school, a profile for LinkedIn and Web Folio. There will be no final exam.

This class has 4 units. For the first three weeks, students will; Introduce themselves, learn how to appropriately write letters, memos and emails for a business/professional context. Then they’ll master writing definitions and perform peer reviews. In the next 3 weeks, the instructor will suggest strategies for formal reports and application packages. For the next 3 weeks, the course will focus on writing with the “YOU” attitude and drafting the formal report. The rest of the time will be dedicated to the completion of assignments.

As a Computer Science student often documentation can be a large part of the projects. My expectations from this course is to learn to manage the balance between being clear and being concise, in emails and memos. In addition I want to learn how to build a resume and a Linkedin profile that exudes professionalism as well as confidence. Since this can often make the difference between landing one’s dream job or not.
