31 Days of Instagram Challenge for Libraries

31 Day IG Challenge

Thank you Pinterest! (Or as my mom likes to say “Pin-interest”. She doesn’t get it.)

I thought that this was an interesting take on the #31daychallenge concept. I have seen lots of friends and family undertake this type of challenge for their own Instagram profiles – with varying levels of success. Could be an interesting idea in a number of ways:

  • Increases the visibility of the library
  • Good starting place if use of social media is a brand new concept to the library
  • Can be linked to already existing tag (#mcm #tbt #flashbackfriday, you know the drill) which increases the findability of the library.

I’ve included the link to the original blog post below. What do you think? Good idea? Too time consuming? Instagram as a platform?

  1. I think this would be a great thing to use! If the library is just starting out with an Instagram account, this could help them insert themselves into the existing conversations. Often knowing what tags to use to be discovered is difficult. Something like this could help librarians to become comfortable with a new Social Media platform, or to challenge themselves to be more active on the site.

  2. Thank you for sharing this Megan, I like the idea that you could view content from various libraries when searching the hashtag. I also like the idea that a library could plan ahead essentially, and know what type of content they will be posting for that month. Maybe having this pre planned and structured content would help librarians feel more comfortable with their use social media as well.

  3. Thanks, Megan! I actually love this idea, for libraries or otherwise.

I’m thinking back to my days at the magazine where I used to work: Pinterest was, unfortunately, an often-neglected social media platform. In comparison, Facebook and Twitter got all the love. A challenge like this with set goals can be ideal to push people out of their comfort zones and try some new ideas on a new social media platform, while also inserting themselves into the conversation.
