Grade 2: grade 2 students have been learning about division using the division board.  They have also been busy practicing their fraction work leading up to our unit on time.

Grade 3: the grade 3 students have been practicing their division facts and using the division board in preparation for the division test tubes.  They have also been working hard on their faction concepts before our unit on  time.

Language

Now that we have finished our Learning Fair we will start our poetry lessons once again.  The students have been writing poetry on their own, but we had to put some poetry on hold while we finished up our research projects.  We are focusing on the second pillar of poetry this week: imagery.  Ask your child about the power of creating images in our mind to go along with our writing and reading.

Culture

What a successful learning fair! Thank you for all coming out to celebrate all the learning last week.

We are going to step away from the plant kingdom and start studying simple machines and forces of motion.

You are invited to Tyee, Division 5 for our learning fair. Please arrive ready to learn about plants and the plant kingdom.

I have taken so many wonderful photos of the projects and the poster boards, but I’m not posting them because I don’t want to spoil the fun! It will be great to see everyone on Wednesday evening.

Learning Fair

Many students have brought home their draft writing to be typed.  Please help your child to type their work, but do not do it for them (however long it may take for them to type).  This is a valuable skill that is only learned with practice. Remember the growth mindset!  Thank you for helping your child to do this.  Please send your child back to school with the typed drafts so that they can put their poster board together! This should return back to the classroom Monday May 15th.

Learning Fair

The learning fair is fast approaching!

Early next week some students will be coming home with their draft writing to be typed.  Unfortunately we do not have the resources at school for all students to type and since it is crunch time many students are at that stage of the project.  Please help your child to type their work, but do not do it for them (however long it may take for them to type).  This is a valuable skill that is only learned with practice. Remember the growth mindset!  Thank you for helping your child to do this.  Please send your child back to school with the typed drafts so that they can put their poster board together!

May Snack Schedule

Language

Students are still very much inspired by our poetry unit.  Right now we are working on our emotional haiku poems.  Ask your child what they chose as their emotional poem sparks!

This is our last week of Literature Circles for the grade 3s.  We are wrapping up our Lemonade Crime book.  We will be meeting on Tuesday for our final discussion.

Math

Grade 1 and 2: both grade 1 and 2 students will be finishing up with measurement this week (although they will continue to measure and track their plant growth).  Students will be moving on to work with fractions before we start time.

Measurement: using animals to estimate and measure objects in the classroom

Grade 3: grade 3 students are using the data they have collected from their plant growth to created a scatter plot graph.  This will be included in their learning fair project.  Grade 3 students are also expected to be practicing their division facts using the Montessori materials.

Culture

My example poster board. -the blank work in the middle is for pastel artwork

The learning fair is fast approaching! Students have been working hard on their research, key word note taking skills, and draft writing for their projects.  Almost all of the students in Division 5 have completed their diagrams and life cycles to include on their poster board.

This week students are expected to have their poem draft (about their learning fair topic) completed, as well as their pastel artwork completed.

Many students will be bringing their draft writing home to type for their poster board if it can’t get done in class.  Parents be aware that draft writing will be coming home the week of May 8-12. Some students have already typed their writing in class or are well on their way and will have time to type up their work in class before that week.

Learning pastel techniques for our artwork component of the learning fair projects.

One grade one student has even finished her entire project.  She was extremely driven and worked hard learning about gymnosperms.
