The Food Situation

We got to Malta planning to get our food from the grocery store and stash it in the communal fridge. The absence of a communal fridge in our hostel scuppered that plan.

The thing about islands is that groceries are really expensive. So are McDonald’s and Burger King (seven euros for a hamburger!). But what turns out to be surprisingly cheap are these ubiquitous food windows:

The selection is always the same: greasy slabs of pizza (€1.50), various chicken, cheese, tuna, and spinach pies (€1.50), cheese, chicken or pea pastizzi (€0.40), donuts (€1.50) and croissants (€1.80). So I’m living the pastizzi and Kinnie diet.

There’s also a classier (and only slightly pricier) window called Dolce Sicilia with the best cannolis and mocha slushies I have ever tasted in my life.
