The Project

The problem presented to the team by UBC SEEDS is that the current system of washing the the pails and carts used in the food scraps composting programme is inefficient. UBC wishes to keep the pails and carts clean to  reduce odors and prevent flies. The team is to come up with an alternative solution to washing them by investigating paper liners or sheets or any other possible solutions. The major task to complete are:

  1. Review the current bins in use and those proposed to use.
  2. Research alternative bin liners that are commercially available.
  3. Research alternative solutions to bin liners.
  4. Interview stakeholders to identify all factors that need to be taken into account.
  5. Develop prototypes and design criteria for possible solutions.

The Organization

UBC Recycling is a subsidiary of UBC Waste Management and Risk Management Services. The mission of UBC recycling is to actively reduce the amount of materials entering the waste stream by maintain recycling bins while retroactively campaigning around campus to encourage students and public to recycle (reuse it! UBC and others).

The Community the Project is Benefiting

UBC prides itself on its environmental awareness and related practices. This project serves to benefit UBC in upholding its green values. The project will also likely benefit the people who work with the compost bins. If we are able to employ the use of a bin liner, people will no longer need to wash out the compost bins so regularly. The project will also serve to benefit society as a whole because of its environmentally friendly nature.
