PS01 The Folly

PARAMETRIC EXPERIMENT WITH JOINTS

The first exercise of the studio is a prelude the development of a folly. The intention of the exercise is to allow you to begin to understand and experiment with the parametric design and begin to experiment with joints. Parametric processes in architectural design are manipulations of geometry – a fundamental aspect of any design. The parametric process is also a powerful tool but the tool must be learned and used to understand its potential. This exercise begins the journey of understanding.

Joints are critical considerations in architecture, especially when it is materially focussed. This exercise also offers you an opportunity to study the joint and to use it expressively in architecture.

The Folly can be any size but shall exhibit a joint between at least two pieces. More pieces are encouraged. The Folly should be thought of as joints joining some elements. Ideally the joint and the element are one. The element should be capable of bounding or defining space in some way.

Another consideration for your Folly is light. The interplay of wood and light is a powerful architectural tool. In a more advanced project, the light will also be an integral part of the exercise, in combination with the spatial effect produced by the assembly of elements.
