Welcome to my UBC Blog for English 301!

English 301 is a Technical Writing course offered online. This course is taught and designed by Dr. Erika Paterson. The course aims to help students develop technical writing skills that are salient for real-world business and professional contexts. The three major assignments of this course consist of the Formal Report, the Job Application package on LinkedIn and the Web Folio. These assignments are followed by a series of smaller assignments that are done independently and collaboratively but are highly based on giving, receiving and processing constructive feedback. This course has been divided into four units, each unit has three lessons: one lesson per week.

The topics for each unit are:

Unit 1 – Principles, Practices and People in English 301

Unit 2 – Designing a Report Proposal; Defining Terms with the Audience in Mind

Unit 3 – Designing a Report Outline & Draft; Building your Resume and Job Application Skills

Unit 4 – Drafting the Formal Report; Peer Review of the Final Report Draft; Developing networking strategies

I hope by the end of this course I can confidently write a professional email, make formal notes of business meetings or presentations and write my research proposals with ease. I hope that I can apply all my learnings from this course in my future professional workplace. I am taking this course as a professional development opportunity during the summer. I want to take my time during this pandemic quarantine to build skills that I otherwise wouldn’t have the time to attain. As much as I love reading books and writing my journal, I want to be comfortable writing professionally.
