Crabtree, John. 2005. Peru: the next Andean domino, posted on June 2005, Open Democracy, free thinking for the world
According to John Crabtree, the 2006 campaign looks likely to be as dirty as any in recent Peruvian history. Many candidates hope to profit from a disillusioned electorate hoping to become another “outsider” president like Alberto Fujimori was in 1990. Fujimori retains considerable popularity among low-income Peruvians. Peru is exceptional in Latin America in the absence of a strong left-wing party or parties. Anti-government protest has tended to be localized and lacking national coordination. The emergence of a unifying political project may be difficult due to the fractious, unequal condition of the country.
