Dear all,

I thought it is good to share some tips from UBC Campus Security with you, wish you can see in the picture below.

The Top TWO tips that I think are most important are

  1. If you have personal valuables in your workspace, they should be taken home or locked out of sight securely until you return.
  2. If you will be working on campus during the Holidays, be aware of your personal safety.; let someone know where you are and when you expect to return.

If you witness a crime in progress, call 911 immediately. Report any suspicious activity immediately to Campus Security at 604-822-2222.

CHBE Christmas Closure 2014

Message below comes from Marlene Chow, the CHBE Manager of Technical and Physical Resources:

Please note the department closure plans and staff availability for the Christmas break. The Building will be locked from December 24th noon until January 2nd but will be accessible with fobs. Custodial services will not be provided during the Christmas Break closure.

If research supplies or materials are required over the Christmas break or early January, place the orders as soon as possible.

For those planning to work during the Christmas break, we encourage you to be safe and adhere to the Work Alone policy and guidelines.

Pumpkin Carving Event

Dear friends,

For this coming Halloween on Friday, we are hosting a Pumpkin Carving Event.

On Friday, October 31, 2014 at 5:15 PM onwards, you are all invited to this halloween themed event.
Pumpkins and pizza are provided but please bring your own tools. No power tools please!

Location: CHBE Atrium (Main floor)
Team: 2 – 4 people
Cost: FREE for all CHBE members and $5 for non-CHBE members.
Tools: strictly hand tools only! No power tools!
Attire: Feel free to dress up as your favorite halloween character!

Note: The event is free for all CHBE members, i.e. grad students, post docs, staff and faculty members, and visiting scholars. Non-CHBE members are welcomed as well but they will have to pay $5 to cover the cost of the pumpkin and refreshment.

CHBE Photo Contest 2014 Announcement

I am pleased to inform that we are gonna have a photo contest for CHBE department. Each of us can submit up to three pictures to chbephotoweek@gmail.com along with the consent form attached HERE.

The content is the most memorable moments in your graduate lives. These pictures going to be uploaded to redbubble website and you can create and vote for your favorite ones.

We also will put a vote box during the coffee break late October. The three
most voted pictures gonna be printed and posted in the department.

Research Day 2014 shout-out!

Research Day, on October 1st, 2014, is a graduate student-driven initiative hosted by the CHBE Graduate Students Club with support from the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department and the Faculty of Applied Science of the University of British Columbia. With the focus on “Gearing for a Sustainable Future”, this full day event will feature two keynote speeches, technical presentations, poster session, networking opportunities and a panel discussion on “Job Search Strategies for Grad Students”.

Winners of June/July PPE Compliance Survey Monthly Draw

Dear 5th and 6th floor lab users in CHBE,

In June, compliance rate was 72%. The target is 100%, i.e. every single person working in their labs wears their PPE!
It was the time to announce the winners of June/July PPE Compliance Survey.
Ivan, our safety officer will conduct monthly PPE check and those who had the highest PPE compliance level, will be put into a draw for a starbuck giftcard!
*The highest PPE compliance level simply means you have lab coat, safety glasses, waterproof footwear and appropriate gloves.
