1) CHBE Grad Mentors:
There are ~10 new grads starting in CHBE this fall. Initial training will be provided. Plus, you will have a Starbucks gift card so that you can take your mentees out for coffee a few times over the year. This initiative will allow new CHBE grads to feel welcomed and continue to become successful graduate students. This is a one year (Sept, 2015 – Aug, 2016) commitment. Upon successful completion, you will be able to include this activity in your CV, and we will be happy to provide a support letter highlighting your contribution to building a supportive CHBE graduate student community. First come, first serve. Please email Naoko (naoko.ellis@ubc.ca) for more info or to sign up.

2) Engineering Mentoring Program, APSC
APSC is providing mentoring program to connect you with industry. The deadline to apply is Sept 25. For more info: http://students.engineering.ubc.ca/mentoring-upper-years

Grad Lounge Renovation

Message by Marlene Chow, CHBE Technical Resource Manager and Dr. Naoko Ellis

The graduate lounge is being renovated.
This has been made possible by the generous donation by Tyler Lewis’ parents, Lynn and Graham. Please see below for details. We apologize for the disturbance this may cause. Please let Marlene and I know if you have any concerns or questions.

The project includes:
– replacement of existing carpet tiles with new linoleum and carpet tiles
– supply and installation of piping for water supply and drain
– supply and installation of cabinets and sink (north side of room)
– supply and installation of counter under window (south side of room)
The construction will start March 9 with removing all items not removed by the students (i.e. furniture etc.)
– installation of tubing to water cooler (no longer require filling of water bottles)
– all necessary electrical to permit operating of two microwaves and toaster/coffee maker at the same time.
– painting
– supply and installation of blinds

The construction is to start March 9 with cleanup of removal of all items in room and removal of carpet tiles. It will take 3-4 weeks to complete. The complexity of the installation is related to coring holes and running supply and drain piping through Dr. Smith’s lab.

The schedule was based on when funding was secured, availability of Building Operations and a desire to complete the project so that Tyler’s friends will still be here and able to participate in an opening ceremony with Tyler’s family.

While this is disruptive, I hope that there is an understanding that the Grad Lounge renovation will be a vast improvement.
