Reflection after the town hall meeting

_DSC7630-1

Thank-you all for coming out to the town hall meeting. I hope it has served you in some way. I will be processing your input for the next few weeks, and sharing them with the faculty over the retreat. I look forward to starting a dialogue and working with many of you in the near future.

One thing that came to me after the session was this challenge of bringing all stakeholders of CHBE together to work towards common goals. The potential barriers that are present can be personal, situational, institutional, etc. I hope that we can work together to minimize many those barriers. We need all of you to recognize where you can make a difference and take charge.

To share my wish…. is to co-create an intellectual community that supports rich educational experience for all in CHBE.

I appreciated Vernique coming out and sharing her point of view. I loved the story of her being rescued when wind surfing, and tying it in with her message of knowing your goals – i.e., know where you are headed.

I hope the graduate lounge reno completes soon, giving us a change to gather again and celebrate.

The slides are posted in Doc Central which is accessible from logging into CHBE IT site. Thanks for those who came early to help set up. I was disappointed to see those who only came for food at the end.

Until next time!
Cheers,
naoko

Presidential Candidates and their words

Ehsan BehzadfarEhsan Behzadfar
Together is amazing! Being a member of the GSC executive team for almost 2 years, I am running for the presidency this year. As a GSC member, my goal will be to bring the graduate students’ energy and enthusiasm into play since I believe in the famous slogan, “Together is amazing!” With a head start of my previous experiences at sport and sponsor coordination, I believe that we, graduate students, are able to make a more interactive and joyful community in which every individual can enjoy being a part it. However, this is not achievable unless we share and combine our ideas,
thoughts, compassions and energies to build a powerful community. Speaking about accomplishments, I have to indicate some of my contributions in GSC, such as contribution in holding Foosball League, talking to more than 10 companies to solicit sponsorship, acquiring a number of gift cards from SaveOnFoods, acquiring 12 jerseys for out indoor soccer team from Telus, contribution in holding the Christmas party in 2011, …

My plans are more focused on increasing the involvement of students and also faculty members in the club activities. I believe that this is us that make the difference to our community. Holding the coffee breaks, breakfast events (if funded), one-day poster session (one poster from each research group), bowling night, hiking trips and get-together events will be some good examples to level up the involvements. Leveraging from my previous experience, we will also try to bring some sponsorship to our events though challenging. The last but not least, we will be welcoming to members’ ideas and thoughts and I do hope to see everybody’s engagement in the club activities.

It is my pleasure to introduce myself as a candidate for the ‘President‘ position. I have started organizing Professional Development Speaker Series for the graduate students in 2011. These seminars are well attended by grad students, post-doctorate fellows and faculty members of our department. The past seminars attracted students from other engineering departments as well. I feel very grateful to each grad students in CHBE, like you, for your tremendous support which makes this series highly successful and earned ‘The 2013 AMS Just Desserts Award’ from UBC.

Recently, I have worked on installing a new Water Dispenser at the grad student lounge. I was able to obtain department’s permission and financial support in less than a month since the task had been assigned to me. I have also worked with fellow executives of the club in organizing the last two parties during Christmas, among others.

If elected, my future plans are to:

  • continue the Professional Development Speaker Series
  • bring back two popular events – BBQ and Movie night (by the way, I’m a great fan of free food and free movie J)
  • organize a CHBE Hiking Trip in summer
  • work on increasing grad student funding
  • provide maximum support for the upcoming CHBE Research Day

Please vote for me! I need your strong support to be able to accomplish these goals.

Reza Rezaei (withdrew his candidacy on the election day)

I am running for a second term as President of the GSC because I believe that the club makes an important impact on the experiences that students have at CHBE.

Last year, I as the GSC president was successful to perform programs introduced by you. All Programs were defined under a goal, organizing events or services to improve the quality of CHBE Graduate students’ life in terms of cultural, social and academic.

My experiences and abilities have been provided me as a prefect leader to manage programs being done well. In GSC for each program or task a manager was assigned and an action plan was prepared and the progress of each program was considered by monthly meetings. The progress of each task was reported and the best strategy for being successful was chosen under my supervision.

During the last year I and my colleagues in GSC were successful to:

–        Reopened the coffee break to improve the social activity
–        Performed Professional Development Speaker Series, invited experts from industries or universities to disseminate important tips and suggestions among CHBE Grad students on how to build successful career in academia or industry
–        Planed the Research day program. This program will be held on September and provides graduate students with learning and networking opportunities. Companies with different activities will come and this program has some sessions including keynote speakers’ talks, workshop and, students’ presentations.

If I elected, my plan is:

–        To accomplish the research day program
–        To increase the GSC budget by finding new financial resources
–        To  continue and develop the Professional Development Speaker Series by inviting more experts from variety companies or organizations
–        To strengthen the social activities with different program

New Water Dispenser in Lunch Room

This post is a bit due, as the water dispenser (the water machine) arrives in our CHBE graduate student lunch room since April 16, 2013 as our CHBE GSC President has announced it.

"GSC is pleased to announce the new water dispenser was purchased. It is in
the graduate students lounge room, 6th floor now. This is surely good news
for Graduate students to access drinking hot/cold water.

Make your own tea or coffee and enjoy it!"

Couple important notes for the water dispenser.

1. The 4 water bottles are refilled every week.

2. If the water bottle is empty, it is everyone’s duty to change it to a filled one.

Here is the instructions on how to change the empty water bottle.

1. Drain all the remaining water on the machine into your own water container or any containers.

2. Carefully remove the empty water bottle. Please be careful not to spill any water.

3.  Pick up a filled water bottle. Note: the filled water bottle is heavy and the top is open.

4. Shiftly, Put the water bottle top first into the top of the water machine. Note: Water will spill at this stage. Try your best to minimize the amount of water spilled.

5. Make sure the water bottle is secured.

6. Last and the least, enjoy the hot water!

Cheers,

Jun Sian Lee
