This story was suggested to me by Shirley in relation to my research question about barriers in nursing education for Indigenous students. I think it really illustrates not only the message of the story (perseverance, that every little bit can help, even if the problem seems insurmountable, even the smallest of us can contribute, no act of kindness is too small), but also how media is used to tell a story that otherwise might not be accessible to anyone outside the community that it’s from. It’s such a beautiful story and I’m grateful to be able to experience it.

Thank you for this story! The hummingbird has a valuable message to share with all of us. Small things can lead to big differences. In its small way, the hummingbird can create a ripple effect and encourage others to look inwards and identify their own unique strengths. Perhaps we aren’t aware of what we are capable of doing. Once we recognize our abilities, we should look at the impact that our combined actions can make.
Exactly! Thank you for highlighting how we as educators can inspire and encourage others. 🙂
This is what I love the most about stories…each of us sees and hears and makes sense of stories in the way that wee need the lessons at that particular place in our journey. Dr. Michael Marker liked to point out that stories escape the window and become a mirror — stories teach us about ourselves.
