The University of British Columbia (UBC) is helping children in Ghana learn to read.

Until recently, Nabit was purely an oral language spoken by the Nabit people of Ghana. Now, this people’s rich folkore is being used to help children read—in Nabit and in English (the country’s official language).

Using generations-old oral stories, UBC and Ghanaian students worked together to create English storybooks that the children helped to illustrate and translate in part into Nabit. For the first time ever, Nabit children are learning to read through stories they can relate to. To find out more and to view the books, go to Ghana children’s verbal stories turned into school books (www) English Hyperlink Notice.
