Section 6: Research Packages
On this page I’ve included the research packages I had a hand in creating during 9 of the 10 cases studied in my cohort at the UBC Bachelor of Education program. Case 8 was about making lesson plans, and they are included in section 5 of this web space.
Case 1: Social Justice, created with Caitlin Gostelow and Stephanie Lynch
This package cites research advocating for a socially just education system particularly in young learners. It includes practical applications for kindergarten students and connects a student’s understanding of social justice issues with educational theories regarding cognitive development.
Case 2: Language Brokering, created with Carli Dunbar, Kelly Wong, and John Wu
This package discusses the concept of children speaking more than one language in a setting where nobody knows all of the languages being used. It explores the contexts of school children translating to each other between English and another language, and children translating between a teacher and their parent. Benefits and potential risks of this practice are discussed in this package.
This package goes over the development of the English language over time in various parts of Canada and the world. It cites research to advocate that the way English is used by a community is part of a unique dialectic identity. Another goal of this package is to make educators aware that differentiation is important in teaching and assessing students in communities with diverse English dialects.
Case 4: Inclusive Education, created with Kelly Wong, Peggy Chan, Pragya Agarwal, and Shannon Mah
This package connects educational theories to the benefits of inclusive education. It goes through BC education legislature regarding family involvement in school and educational orders regarding students with IEPs. It also contains tips and practical applications for creating an inclusive teaching environment.
This package cites research arguing that education has historically relied on a medical model of disability that marginalizes people with disabilities. It highlights the work of dis/ability artists and explains ways a more social model of disability promotes socially just education for students with disabilities.
Case 6: Daily Physical Activity, completed with Carli Dunbar, Hansol Won, Jacqueline Lee, & Shannon Mah
This package contains research with evidence of specific cognitive and emotional benefits to regular physical activity. Research on this topic is very current, and there are passionate advocates for finding meaningful activities that incorporate movement in classes.
Case 7: Human Rights, created with Justine Brett, and Peggy Chan
This package goes through the historical progress of human rights legislation from a settler-based, Canadian standpoint. It uses a particular focus on LGBTQ+ and SOGI rights.
Case 9: Core French, created with John Wu, Kelly Wong, and Josephina Kim
This package focuses on gardening and outdoor education. It is meant to help teachers who have anxiety around teaching French and promote learning through nature, gardening, health, and food.
This package mimics social media and other online web spaces while providing resources for using technology to help with the subjects in its title.
All of these cases include an annotated bibliography, and further links to more research and resources. In the final section, I will post links to content I’ve created for entertainment purposes.
