A good life requires balance and the Vancouver Enrolment Service crew practice this mantra daily – well, every Tuesday to be exact. Running for almost two years (and counting), Admissions Advisor Effy Katahan took initiative to organize a weekly one hour lunchtime yoga class. It started with a hand full of participants from the Undergraduate office who Effy approached with the incentive to get moving at work. A once small group has now expanded to 20 and many members of Enrolment Services are straying their desks to roll out yoga mats in Brock Hall’s Basement.

Yoga Instruction
The yoga classes are instructed by UBC’s own Lila Popa, yoga instructor and owner of Rooftop Yoga. Lila believes that “yoga not only sculpts the body and benefits the mind, but also teaches many great lessons in life such as discipline, self-awareness, moderation and balance.” Lila brings these principles into her instruction, practicing controlled movements and structured breaths. Her methodology is varied, incorporating combinations of hatha, ashtanga (power) and restorative yoga along with pilate techniques. Lila approaches each class with an open perspective, asking her Yogis if there are any specific areas or types of yoga they’d like to focus on, and caters to their needs. Her classes can be described as relaxing, empowering, strengthening and rejuvenating.
