K’omoks Treaty Site

Visit the Comox Band Treaty Site, just don't expect much

It is troublesome to me to see how much is dedicated to the treaty and how little within these two connected sites (see “My Neighbours”) is dedicated to history and/ or education about either the K’omoks people or the land itself. I am not sure why, but I expect more. But really, why do I have any expectation in this regard at all? I mean you can’t deny any person or organization from the chance to earn a living and perhaps there is a reason for not sharing more about the culture and for dedicating the bulk of web efforts to commercial purposes. Maybe it is the best way? Maybe there isn’t much you can learn about the thousands-of-years history of a people on a two decade old technology? I think I will go ask somebody at the band office about the reasoning…..

Qw’oqw’elith’a Coqualeetza Cultural Education Centre

http://www.coqualeetza.com/

This is good example of how a community can bring about positive change for the community.  Coqualeetza was the residential school out in Chilliwack which both my grandparents attended. Over the years it has gone from Residential school, to TB hospital and now turned into our cultural center. This is also a good example how a community is using technology and culture together in a respectful way.

Slahal Coast Salish bone game!

http://www.sd48.bc.ca/aboriginal/Slahal.html

This is one of the links from SD 48. It uses technology to share and teach students about the game Slahal. This is a traditional game played by Coast Salish people. This is a link that I often share with my students who are interested in the Slahal game. This is a good exampe of how something cultural can be preserved, shared, and taught through technology.

Coast Salish Peoples website

http://www.coastsalishgathering.com/index.html

This is a good example of communities working together for a cause. This are Coast Salish people from Canada and the United States. As stated on their website

“The Coast Salish peoples sacred inherent right is to restore, preserve, and protect our shared environmentand natural resources in our ancestorial homelands — the Salish Sea.”

They have some good resources in written form, photos and videos posted. They are using technology to share information, record pictures of events and use videos

Welcome to the Research Weblog!

eagle in tree

These weblogs provide information on the collective research conducted by the students in the MET’s ETEC 521 Indigeneity, Technology, and Education. These annotated weblogs describe resources available, links to other sites, and usefulness for research on Indigenous knowledge, media, and community reality.

Only students in the MET course ETEC521 can author postings on this weblog.  Please refer to the instructions in the ETEC521 course site for instructions on how to add yourself to this weblog.

You can also look at the archives to find the research journals of students from previous years, going back to 2005.  Not all of the postings are still available in these archives, but there is a wealth of information pertaining to potential research resources to be found in the archives.

For each posting you make to the Research Weblog, please assign an appropriate category (e.g., Module 1, Module 2, Module 3, or Module 4). You are expected to make 5 entries per Module, and by adding the categories, it will be easy for you (and for others in the class), to quickly see any postings relating to the Modules. Also, if you add tags (keywords) to your postings, we will also be able to generate a “tag-cloud” of thematic terms that provide an additional way for people to find resources that might be of interest to them. This tag-cloud will grow as the number of postings made to the weblog grows and will, in time, become an interesting way to explore the material we are creating together.

Please feel free to comment on one another’s postings!
