I teach Grade 6 French Immersion in semi-rural Newfoundland. Like many who teach second languages in Canada and beyond, it is very challenging to find authentic opportunities for my students to talk, learn, and engage in their “target language”. There are many digital tools that purport to help with this, but most lack the responsiveness and personal touch that authentic language learning relies on.
VR, AI, and even basic videoconferencing programs offer many opportunities to bring authentic language experiences into the classroom (and into students’ hands, wherever they are). For this project, I have created a presentation to outline the needs of second-language learners, and propose how AI may, or may not, be able to help meet these goals.
