Rip.Mix.Feed – Diigo Social Bookmarking

I have used the site/app Diigo to create my Rip.Mix.Feed project.  Although I have yet to use Diigo as an educator in a classroom setting, I see a lot of potential as a social bookmarking application.  Diigo includes the basic tagging and sharing functions that are characteristic of social bookmarking applications to create its own user created folksonomy. In addition to searchable tags and customizable networks, users can highlight and annotate web pages that include text, images and video. In addition to the enabling of social filtering, it allows users to share comments and notes in a conversation about topics using a wide range of tools.

As an educator, privacy issues and the impact of commercial interests on social media have limited my willingness to use bookmarking and sharing sites in the classroom.  Diigo offers education licensing which creates a closed group with privacy settings tailored for the educator and class scenario. The group can share links and notes or, as I have done for my Rip.Mix.Feed project, create “Outliners”, which are specific sets of links with annotations and notes typically created by the teacher.  Although unpolished, I have created an “Outliner” which explores First Nations history in B.C with a focus on language.  The students would be asked to view the sources, add their own resources they find, and highlight and annotate the sources in response to critical questions created by the teacher and each other;  I think of it as a social web quest.

  1. Hi Brendan,
I really like the idea of social bookmarking sites. I think it could be a lot of help to students to create a community resource. The privacy aspects are a big issue though, so it is nice to know that some sites are thinking about these problems and developing solutions.
