Assignment 4 – Social Bookmarking: Literacy and the Information Explosion

I chose to focus my fourth assignment on the topic of social bookmarking and tagging.  With the rapid growth of information, the ability to navigate and link resources will be as important as the ability to create and interpret the different types of media being produced.  I’ve created a Weebly site using a mix of text, images and video to present my information.  Throughout this course it has become more apparent that when presenting information, choosing an appropriate medium is an important part of design.  In an attempt to create a linear reading space to suit the roll out of content, the site only has one page instead of several tabs. This means that the reader will probably be more likely to begin at the start and finish at the end, instead of wondering through the space of a typical web page.  As part of the design, I have also included a link to a text-only version of the resource for the same reason, I think linear text is sometimes better than mixed media.

  1. Great job. It is a challenge now sorting and connecting all the digital content out there. Big Data is becoming very important. It is simply how to relate and connect content and make meaning out of it. Tools are being created to benefit from Big Data. In the research domain there must be tools to keep the researcher connected to the research community and be up-to-date.

  2. Hi Brendan,
I really like the point you made about needing to understand how a search engine presents its results. This is such an important point to understand that nobody thinks about, but the results we are shown can bias our information.
