Connecting Day 1 Sessions

In the April (8,15, 16) ISW, we introduced the day 1 theme sessions as a single theme session on Lesson Design (Theory). We created a worksheet that the participants used during the 4 parts of the lesson (LO; Motivation; PL; Assessment). During each part, they were asked a couple of questions on the worksheet that got them to apply the lesson to the design of their first mini-lesson. At the end of all 4 parts they had 10-15 minutes to look at their mini-lesson and make changes to it based on their worksheet.

This worked well on a couple of levels:

It connected the 4 theme sessions we do on day 1 without the facilitators having to design them together.
And it helped our participants solidify what they were learning by providing them with an opportunity for an immediate application of their learning (on which they also received feedback in the afternoon).

We sent out a google form to participants when we sent out our welcome email. The google form consisted of: a) their names; b) preferred phone number; and c) best availability for phone call.

Give out a lesson plan on Day 1 and use that throughout the morning sessions so all lesson basics are well tied in to create a good lesson plan.

Next time

We had one participant allergic to scents and struggled to find sufficient unscented markers. Also, the dry-erase wet wipes are scented. Next time this could be part of the planning.

Kat’s large group icebreaker (no name island) –> you’re stranded with $20, what would you bring (one item); then team up with a small group and act/draw what you would do with all the items.
Use less FC paper, can use the white background of the FC board with dry-erase markers

Flexible Learning

*Feedback and mini-lesson cycle on the online part
*Re-arranging the website to have the intro and welcome in a different sub-header
*Online dotmocracy including LOs and voting via email (could be done via google forms or surveymonkey)

NEW IDEAS!

Jens used a simple-yet-amazing way to make up for the absence of participant’s disciplines in the current registration form. He looked them up on the web and added the info to the registration list. We were able to use this for tentative formation of small groups, and also to have an idea of where to focus on in our Day 1 theme sessions.

Teaching techniques (small group)
At the end of each day, have participants share what teaching technique they saw/did. challenge them after each day to ‘fill the paper’ up.(Thanks Jens)
