Sophia Luo

Undergraduate (B.A. Linguistics)

Sophia is an undergraduate linguistics major at the University of California, Los Angeles. She first infiltrated the UBC Interdisciplinary Speech Research Lab in the summer of 2018, when she was a visiting student working on the Bite Block Bracing project under the direction of Dr. Bryan Gick. She is interested in physiological mechanisms of speech production and their implications in phonology. Sophia’s alter ego at UCLA currently works on the syntax of passivization in Indonesian, as well as modality and polar questions in Sinitic. She is also investigating syntactic/semantic effects of falling intonational contour in English polar questions. Outside of linguistics, Sophia is an avid hockey fan and jazz enthusiast. She is also greatly entertained by the rare opportunity to write about herself in third person.
