Smiled Speech
Project Overview
When movements pull in opposite directions, the body needs to resolve the resulting conflict. Speech generates countless such conflicts, and how these get resolved is fundamental to understanding speech. The Smiled Speech Project is focused on how the body resolves the “tug-of-war” conflict between lip spreading and lip compression in smiled speech. Our initial studies of this conflict have revealed active conflict resolution mechanisms in English.
Subsequent studies look at Korean, a language that contains no labiodental tokens in its inventory and is of particular interest in that the inventory exhibits a three-way stop contrast (fortis, lenis, and aspirated) between voiceless stops. Showing that labiodentalization occurs under smiling conditions in Korean indicates that this resolution mechanism operates independent of specifically trained speech targets.
