Position Overview:
The Summer IMP Field Technician with ES Crop Consultants will work over in the Lower Mainland of BC (Delta, Surrey, Richmond, Langley, Abbotsford, and Pitt Meadows) to collect pest (insects, mites, diseases, and weeds) information to help growers achieve more effective pest control.
The technician will be working primarily outdoors in all weather conditions within a team of other technicians and supervisors while also being able to drive throughout the Lower Mainland.
Field technicians gain experience in insect, mite, weed and disease identification. Field work, time management, collecting and organizing data are additional skills that are developed. Technicians gain a well-balanced view of both local and global agricultural issues. Former technicians have gone on to become permanent staff at E.S. Cropconsult Ltd. or on to other jobs at Agriculture Canada, BC Ministry of Agriculture, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and other agribusinesses.
Responsibilities:
- Monitor vegetable and/or berry crops for insects, mites, diseases and weeds
- Collect field data and complete field data sheets with consistency and accuracy
- Identify problems or irregularities in the fields being monitored
- Communicate effectively with field crews and supervisors
- Organize and file field data
- Navigate between and within field sites
- Assist on research projects (as available)
Requirements:
- Mature work ethic
- Interested in agriculture or reated disciplines
- Able to work a physically demanding outdoor job
- Previous work in ecology or agriculture is an asset
- Access to a reliable vehicle, valid BC (or equivalent) drivers license class 7N or higher
Compensation:
$16/hour paid bi-weekly with an average work week of 32-40 hours.
Mileage will be paid at $0.53/km for the use of personal vehicles.
Vacation pay (4%) will be paid out with each pay cheque.
