2014 LFS FROSH Co-Chair opportunity – applications due Feb 21

Want to be part of the most exciting UBC LFS FROSH event? We are currently looking for awesome people like you to apply to become the 2014 LFS FROSH Co Chair! LFS FROSH is an unforgettable introduction to the Faculty of Land and Food Systems that allows incoming first-year students an opportunity to build long-lasting relationships with fellow classmates. The position term will run from February to September 2014.

As a FROSH Co Chair you will be hiring, organizing and overseeing the LFS FROSH planning committee. You will be setting achievable deadlines, providing assistance to, and being a first contact for all Executives on the planning committee.

Duties and Responsibilities: • Head of the entire LFS FROSH 2014 event • Hire and lead a planning committee to organize and run FROSH 2014 • Facilitate reimbursements and aid in budget management • Liaise with faculty and LFS|US to ensure successful execution of LFS FROSH • Recruit volunteers for the event • General management of volunteers • Be creative and HAVE FUN!

Job Posting: CRUW Volunteers – due Feb 28

Position Description:

The CRUW Program brings Aboriginal youth in foster care together with non-­-Aboriginal inner city youth to engage in culturally relevant land-­- based practices promoting holistic and sustainable urban wellness. Program objectives include:

  1. Honouring Our Diversity, and applying ancestral Aboriginal knowledge and practice to contemporary urban living;
  2. Emotional and Cultural Competence towards breaking down stereotypes, bullying and discrimination;
  3. Holistic Urban Wellness, emphasizing the prevention and reduction of substance misuse and healthy life transitions; and
  4. Mentorship, emphasizing peer mentorship and Aboriginal Elder-­-youth connections.

The CRUW program runs for 16-­-sessions, every second Saturday, at the UBC Farm from March to October. The program accepts 18 Aboriginal and 9 non-­-Aboriginal youth and hires 4 youth mentors annually. Participants are split into 3 groups, and rotate through 3 activity blocks each session: 1 garden block; 1 block related to a program objective; and 1 team-­-building and reflection block.

Each youth group in CRUW is led by a group leader who is supported by a youth worker, a youth mentor and a volunteer. CRUW is seeking 8 Volunteers to provide support for a minimum of one session per month between March and October. This position also requires attending the initial staff and volunteer orientation, and being available for 30 minutes between sessions to debrief the group staffing team. Volunteers are paired and assigned to either a specific youth group or the CRUW garden coordinator. One of the volunteer positions (shared by 2 volunteers) will provide the opportunity to work exclusively alongside the CRUW Garden Coordinator. This is a great opportunity especially for those interested in gaining experience with land-­-based youth work, place-­-based education, and growing food and medicine plants. Pairs on volunteers can attend every second session, or develop a schedule for attending the program that suits the specific needs of their schedules. The 2014 CRUW dates are as follows: March 15 (staff orientation), March 22, April 5, April 19, May 3, May 17, May 31, June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, August 9, August 23, September 6, September 20, October 4 and October 18. Responsibilities:

  • Act as a positive role model for youth
  • Engage with youth who need extra support and provide 1 on 1 opportunities
  • Provide extra support to youth and staff during lunch time
  • Support group leader as needed

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for working with young people in outdoor setting, rain or shine
  • Criminal Record Check (to be provided by VACFSS)
  • Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of ancestral and contemporary Aboriginal society and culture, and/or experience working with Aboriginal youth

  • Youth Workers are responsible for picking up a VACFSS vehicle the morning of CRUW sessions, meeting youth at a designated transportation point, and driving them to and from the UBC Farm.
  • On the Farm Youth Workers are assigned to a group for the entire duration of the program, and are responsible for: taking a leadership role in supporting their group to engage in activities throughout the program; leading energizers and/or games during lunch hour, or as needed in their group; and supporting their group leader to engage youth in reflective debrief sessions.
  • As notes above, Youth Workers must also be available to participate in a 30 minute conversation between sessions for a debrief with the group leader (either in person or by phone), scheduled based on the availability of youth worker and group leader

Qualifications:

  • Strong capacities in youth work-­- including the ability to work one-­-to-­-one, and also to facilitate, coordinate, support and engage groups of youth;
  • 2 years relevant work experience
  • Valid First Aid certification
  • A valid drivers license and confidence to drive a 7 seat van (with a youth mentor as supervision support) to transport up to 5 youth to and from the UBC Farm.
  • A Criminal Record Check (provided by VACFSS)
  • Experience in outdoor experiential education and/or summer camps an asset
  • Class 4 drivers’ license an asset
  • Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of ancestral and contemporary Aboriginal society and culture, and/or experience working with Aboriginal youth

Responsibilities (On-­-Site):

  • Taking the lead role in supporting their group to engage in garden activities and workshops;
  • Effectively organize and facilitate games and activities for youth in their group during un­-structured time on the farm;
  • Facilitate reflective debrief sessions for their group;
  • Provide supervision and leadership to the youth worker, volunteer and youth mentor supporting their group.

Responsibilities (Between Sessions):

  • Schedule and lead a 30-­-minute discussion with their staffing team (either in person or by phone) to debrief the previous session and identify any issues that occurred on-­-site, scheduled based on availability of youth worker and group leader;
  • Participate in a one-­-hour Group Leader debrief session (attended by all 3 group leaders, and facilitated by the program coordinator), scheduled by the Program Coordinator based on the availability of all participants;
  • Additional duties & responsibilities as assigned by the VACFSS Special Projects Officer and/or Program Coordinator

Qualifications:

  • Strong capacities in youth work-­- including the ability to work one-­-to-­-one, and also to facilitate, coordinate, support and engage groups of youth;
  • First-hand experience in facilitating goal setting, and debriefs with youth;
  • First-hand experience facilitating outdoor/experiential programming for youth, staff and volunteers;
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with an undergraduate or graduate degree in social work, education, recreation, health science, anthropology or related fields;
  • Candidates with a diploma in child and youth care or a similar field and 2 years of related working experience will also be considered;
  • First-hand experience supervising staff and volunteers
  • First-hand experience working with Aboriginal youth;
  • Valid First Aid;
  • Valid Criminal Record Check (to be provided by VACFSS);
  • Valid divers license
  • Class 4 drivers license an asset.
  • Preference will be given to candidates of Aboriginal ancestry.

Faculty Cup is a campus-wide sports competition where faculties compete to be the best at UBC.

City Beet Farm Summer Internship Opportunity

City Beet Farm is an urban farm located in the Riley Park/Mt. Pleasant neighbourhoods. They are looking for summer interns for the upcoming farming season.

Here’s a little about CBF: We are a small-scale intensive vegetable farm that replaces grass in front and back yards with vegetables. We then sell the veggies as part of a 50 person CSA. The farm is bike powered and the food is all grown in the community for the community. We have a flexible and fun farm environment, and would love to hear from people interested in learning more about farming and the local food system.

LFS|US Elections – Get your nominations in by Feb 28th! Vote Mar 10-14th!

LFS|US Elections are coming up!

The Land and Food Systems Undergraduate Society (LFS|US) is committed to building a sense of community within the Faculty of Land and Food Systems by hosting events such as the Wednesday Night dinners, the Community Dinner, Aggie week, Grad Dinner and much more.

Nomination forms will be provided on February 24th and must be submitted by the February 28th. After that time, campaigning will begin for the first two weeks of March (3rd to 14th), overlapping with the voting period from March 10th to 14th.
