Internship: Local Food Economy Assistant

Do you know a UBC student that ;oves farmers markets? Do they care about our local food economies and food literacy in our communities? Maybe they would like to go into food business one day? The multi-vendor Saturday Markets see up to 600 shoppers each Saturday and hosts up to 16 vendors and food trucks selling, in addition to UBC Farm produce, mushrooms, prepared food, baked goods, beverages, and crafts.
The UBC Farm has a small and dedicated crew and are looking for an intern to join the team to make this season’s markets the best one yet. The Farmers Market Assistant will have the opportunity to gain skills in local food marketing and sales, farmer’s market operations, sustainable food literacy, program design and delivery, marketing and promotions, data collection and analysis, marketing, and community engagement

Using pollinators as a lens for examining agriculture and food system issues, Dr. Kremen will discuss how our current food system is not only unhealthy for the planet, but also for pollinators and people. She will describe studies of native bees that reveal how to create environmentally-friendly farming systems that are also highly productive.
Dr. Claire Kremen is Professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at University of California, Berkeley, and co-directs the Center for Diversified Farming Systems and the Berkeley Food Institute there.

Organic farming is one of the fastest growing sectors of world agriculture. Although it represents only one per cent of world agricultural area, organic is one of the most recognized food labels and most people in developed countries consume some amount of organic food today.
For this talk Dr. Verena Seufert, a Post Doctoral Fellow in UBC’s Land Use and Global Environment Lab, will expand on her research examining different organic regulations from across the world to understand how they have codified the large diversity of ideas inherent in organic agriculture.

Borders in the 21st Century – Mar 23, 2017
This panel discussion aims to unpack the social, economic, cultural and political landscape of modern Western hegemony, specifically in regards to the rise of economic and political borders in UK (Brexit) and US (Trump), and its consequences on the rest of the world.
The panel will be organized around four main themes: (1) Economic Globalization, Neoliberalism and Free Trade, (2) Border Imperialism, Islamophobia and Settler Colonialism, (3) Whiteness and the Rise of White Nationalism in the West, and (4) Resistance and Seeking Change.
Confirmed panelists include Litsa Chatzivasileiou (UBC GRSJ), Daniel Tseghay (Community Organizer), Jamie Peck (UBC Geography) , Geoffrey Mann (SFU Geography), Vanessa Andreotti (UBC Education), Leonora C. Angeles (UBC GRSJ and SCARP) and Zehra Naqvi (UBC English, Undegraduate).
