Sexism, Racism, and Speciesism: Intersecting Oppressions | Apr 1, 2016

Social justice, animal justice and environmental justice are intimately connected and we should no longer treat them as separate issues. Speaking from an eco-feminist perspective, Élise Desaulniers will demonstrate why our relationship with non-human animals is at the core of our struggle against many forms of human oppression. She will offer suggestions to support the development of an animal rights movement that acts in solidarity with other progressive and environmental movements. Finally, she will raise some questions about the role of women in the animalist movement.

April 1, 2016

12:30-2pm

MCML 258

Élise Desaulniers is an independent scholar and animal rights activist based in Montréal, Québec. She is the author of three books on food ethics, animal agriculture and veganism. Her book Cash Cow: Ten Myths About the Dairy Industry was translated and published in English by Lantern Books in 2015. She co-authored two articles in the Encyclopedia of Food and Agricultural Ethics (Springer 2014) and won the Quebec Grand Prize for independent journalism (opinion) for a piece on feminism and anti-speciesism in 2015. She frequently speaks in colleges, universities, and community events.

AMS Impact Grant – applications due Mar 29, 2016

The AMS Impact Grant is an initiative giving funding to UBC students interested in conducting scholarly research to build knowledge and understanding of post-secondary matters affecting UBC Vancouver’s community.

The goal of the program is to create a healthier, more supportive, more successful student community. Depending on the length or scope of their proposal, applicants may receive up to $3000 for a project lasting a year. However, particularly ambitious projects may receive more funding and last longer if the applicant provides proper justifications. Most of the grant should be used to help defray the salaries of the research lead and team, but may also be used to reimburse such materials, supplies and equipment directly required to carry the research. Proposals should include a description of research to be conducted, ideas for how this research can inform positive changes at UBC by building upon existing work happening at UBC, and a realistic plan for implementing these ideas.

Over the course of their year-long projects, successful applicants will spend 6 months conducting research, and the remaining 6 months implementing results while working with an AMS staff member and/or a person or unit at UBC. For more information, and to apply by March 29, visit http://www.ams.ubc.ca/leadership/executive/key-projects/impact-grant/
