#101: Culinary creations (and other updates)

Currently listening to: “Dear Confessor” – Immaculate Machine

I really ought to keep up to date with blogging; life is simply flying by at the moment. Over the past week, the Olympic haze has lifted, propelling us back into the skid-stop-go routine of la vie quotidienne. In between dashing from meetings to class to work, I’ve been listening to way too much Architecture in Helsinki, fangirling Joseph Stiglitz, and practicing the ukulele.

Oh, and cooking.

From stews and soups for one to treats for sharing, I’ve been de-stressing by making delectable little creations – as I type this, there are meringue cookies baking in the oven and they smell absolutely heavenly, if I do say so myself. Photos will follow in due time!

Egg whites and sugar
Beating sugar into egg whites until they form stiff peaks for the meringue cookies!

Another fun little savoury treat which my roommates adore are microwave potato chips. If you’ve ever got a spare potato lying about the fridge, this five-minute recipe for crisps is unbelievable. I was initially skeptical about making crisps in the microwave, but they turned out excellently: just the right amount of crunch, and made perfectly to taste. These are particularly wonderful when you’re just craving a crisp or two – or if you’re like me, can’t be bothered to run down to the convenience store and grab a bag. I’ve also been experimenting with flavours…salt and vinegar might be the next one.

Microwave crisps!
Microwave crisps! Omnomnom.

So I thought, well, you could probably make chips out of other things in the same way, with some minor tweaks.

Apple chips!
Apple chips! Sliced apples on a plate, sprinkle with a little sugar, microwave. Not quite as delectable as the potato chips, but tasty nonetheless.

In the meantime, what are your favourite recipes? What other vegetable chips should I tackle next? Drop me a line, and contribute to procrastination!

#066: Scoping out Imagine Day…and cupcakes.

Currently listening to: “Air” – Hair 2009 New Broadway Cast

I woke up yesterday morning and gazed out of the window of my 13th floor Gage Towers apartment* to see streams of tidily colour-coded first years traipsing across campus trailing behind MUG leaders with aptly-named signs. Then I took a mental moment to silently welcome them to a new adventure – and paused to think, “oh, the little ones!” And then realized that they were probably all taller than me. Nevertheless! I hope everyone had fun- it sure sounds like it, from what I’ve gathered! (Pep rally for the win!)

*We will talk about moving some other time. Suffice to say, I’m in one of the newly-renovated towers, with lovely hardwood floors, and it is all quite lovely indeed. And yes, I did forget a ridiculous amount of assorted items (toothbrush, Mary? Really now?) and did the predicted bus ride back to North Van to retrieve said items. Anyhow.

Kick-starting second year with baking cupcakes for our Imagine Day booth with the rest of the French Club executives was definitely a great way to start the year. We made over 50 mini-cupcakes, decorated prettily with a dollop of icing in the middle, and then covered them liberally with colourful sprinkles allsorts. They were delicious, if we do say so ourselves. The lovely weather yesterday was definitely a nice change from the past few drizzly days…and today’s bout of miserable on-off leaky faucet in the sky rain.

In completely unrelated news!

Jack Layton will be speaking at the SUB Party Room (2nd floor) tomorrow (September 10), so if you’re interested, do come by and take a listen! He’ll also be at the Gallery in the SUB at 7 pm, so that should be cool too.

On to dinner-making; I’d forgotten how much effort cooking for oneself requires. Eggplant and tomato bake, here I come!

#060: Of course registrations and cookie-baking

Currently listening to: “Superboy and the Invisible Girl” – Next to Normal OBCR

COURSE REGISTRATIONS for upcoming second-years start in a week (July 13) and already, a plethora of courses are either full or teetering at that point, with three seats left, give or take. I was looking forward to taking PHIL 385: Existentialism, before it filled up. I watched it diminish from 90 seats to 40 to 3 and then to nothingness. And don’t even get me started on BIOL 121, which sits there mocking me! Mocking, I say! with its completely overbooked classes and unopened waitlists except for that 8 a.m. class, which has a grand total of 15 seats left (and counting). This is especially frustrating as I struggle to get into the second-year prerequisites for both a French and a Psychology major. Seven days to go; we shall see how it all pans out. These hawk eyes are watching those French classes; nobody is taking Voltaire away from me! Meanwhile, we draw our thoughts away from those confounded course registrations to those of…

COOKIE-BAKING. I’ve been feeling rather domestic lately. This is unusual. For those who are unfamiliar with my cooking habits; well, let’s say most of my friends would rather have me play with pointy objects than cook them a meal. I have ruined microwave popcorn and would rather not tell that story here. But over the past few weeks, I’ve baked jimjams twice, once with sugar-cookie bases and the other time with peanut butter cookie bases, and Nutella swirl cookies…and a cake for la fĂȘte de la St.-Jean Baptiste, if we’re just getting into baking in general. Surprisingly, they have emerged rather successfully from the oven…to grabby hands (teenage brother in a growth spurt will demolish any freshly baked goods).

I will post the recipes if anyone is interested!
