Connecting Learning to Practice – Tinfoil Boats

We had a fantastic class on pedagogy in science and I found it very valuable when I was actually teaching.  In this case, I used an activity that we learned in our class at UBC to teach a lesson on buoyancy.

This is also an example of one of the activities I used to try to create an engaging classroom atmosphere.  Having the students build and test a boat gets them out of their desks.  It also gives students who are more tactile a better learning experience, but also enables those who are auditory or visual learners to engage their learning styles as well.  There is also discussion about respect and appropriate behavior while boats are being tested.
