Pedagogy

With my philosophy of teaching based upon caring relationships developed within a caring learning community, there are three main strategies I practice within my pedagogy to develop the desired atmosphere in my classroom.  The first is talking to and respecting students as I would like to be.  Finding opportunities within class time and outside of class time to talk with students as people and not just students.  This helps to develop a respectful and safe atmosphere in the class.  Talking with students also helps establish boundaries because you have a chance to speak frankly about what is acceptable behavior in a situation that students are much more comfortable have a discourse and receiving feedback.  The second strategy is using the physical setting of the classroom. Using circles for sharing times changes the dynamic of the class and provides an greater level of participation.  During my inquiry project,  I looked at a few different ways to change the seating of a class and I have found that changing the format of the seating, i.e. rows, groups, circles, facilitates a changing of students outlook and challenges the learning environment to grow.  Finally, I incorporate choice and student feedback in my teaching.  I truly believe any class belongs to all of the people in that class and not just the teacher, so students should feel some amount of involvement and control over what happens in the class.
