Volunteer

My enjoyment of volunteer and community service work developed out of my parents’ beliefs. My family believes that people should care about something other than themselves all of the time and that too much downtime generally leads to no good. My earliest memories revolve around UNICEF, athletic fundraisers for various causes, Christian church drives, and Orthodox Greek days.

I felt compelled to give back to my host country, which had given me so much. I had accumulated in excess of 130 volunteer hours between NCCU and our student body’s sanctioned events.

As educators, we need to engage our youth; notions of engagement must be seeded in middle school and allowed to flourish in high school. My beliefs and experiences will aid me as a teacher. For example, I played an instrumental role in a recent environmental campaign “No More Trash” that was launched for a class project. People and sponsors were recruited to participate and pay for promotional items, and the project was discussed on the radio and written about in news articles. At our last event, we even met and shook hands with President Ma.
